Hello all... Just getting a bit of feedback here. I have been teaching in NYC for the past five years. I must be frank and admit that I am feeling a bit homesick and would love to move back to LA. I have permanent New York certification in Secondary English Education. My experience in NYC has been nothing less than wonderful. I am now teaching ninth and tenth grade English at one of the city's most distinguished high schools. Yet, I feel this deep desire to return...I have been away from family and friends for far too long. I have been doing a bit of research and have some foundation of info upon which I can plan my return. I would most like to teach in the Lafayette or Baton Rouge areas. If anyone can offer any information about job opportunities in those areas, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you dearly.
Okay, I will admit that out football team has been doing well but, they decided to give the head football coach a 3,000 dollar raise and a 30,000 dollar SUV. The bad part is that Morehouse parish won't even buy new books for the students, if they wanted to spend mony on something it should be on the education.

Im a student. I think the whole thing is crazy, I mean they have to do a fund raiser to buy new books but they can give him 3,000 more dollars. And if I were a teacher I would still be upset, we hav esome how have 20+ years of experience but they don't get respected because they haven't won a championship
Everything was banned from the internet. We can't even get on some educational websites. It is really frustrating, thank goodness I have a computer I can use at home.

Hi, I have completed my teacher assesment, and its almost time for my level 1 certificate to expire. I need to know if I have to apply for a level 2 or if im automatically updated.
hi, I will be graduating from high school this year, and I have some things I really don't understand. What I want to know iis, when do you take the Praxis test and when do you apply for certification. And what advise do you hav efrom me. I have gotten everything from never "believe children because they always lie" etc.
thank you and your responce will be greatly apricated.
It's great that you are so eager to become a teacher, but settle down! The first thing you have to do is declare your major, then Tech will set you up with an advisor who will answer questions such as these. Also, don't you mean "what advice do you have for me"?

What are you other elementary teachers doing for spelling instruction? The new CC says to teach spelling rules as they come up in Reading Essentials. The fourth grade is a big problem for me. Their Reading Essentials dissects words with Greek/Latin roots. Our district doesn't want us using the spelling book we once used. What do you do?
I'm still using the spelling book. It may not be the perfect system for spelling, but it's better than leaving it up to the whims of students or the teacher to come up with spelling words. Plus, I look at it as a way to introduce vocabulary and increase their sight word recognition.

Are you LA teachers that are close to retirement aware that you cannot draw spousal SS benefits from your non-teacher spouse? It's called GPO (government pension offset).
Make it a glass of reisling and you've got a deal! Actually, I'm not sure there would be much left to say, it looks like we agree more than we disagree.
There is a real gap in the way SS is sold to people and what it really is. I have always questioned how they expect to pay people, like my grandmother, who paid very little in for the rest of her life and still keep the system solvent. I go back to my original posting, I don't think FDR and other New Deal Reformers ever imagined SS would last this long. Like many of the New Deal programs, I sure it was a temporary measure until the country got back on it's feet. I wonder what he would think now?
It is not fair because widows and widowers collect spousal benefits from social security when based on their spouse when he or she passes away...in California the usual benefit to widows and widowers in reduced by 2/3 if the widow or widower is a teacher...how is this fair? I stayed home for the first 20 years of marriage...my situation is not unique, but I will be penalized as if I had been teaching all that time. I went into teaching late and I'm not sorry I did but don't feel this is fair as it is not universally applied. Even worse, many teachers in California worked for 10 or 20 years in other fields prior to teaching, but because they made teaching their 2nd they will lose most of their social security benefits, around 2/3 down the drain, so even though my situation is not fair to me, others are being hurt far more. People who have not studies the issue do not understand the ramifications, California is, I believe, not the only state to be so affected, but most teachers in other states do not meet this obstacle.

It depends on what you want to get your degree in. I am in Ed Tech through Northwestern State University and I absolutly love it. The people are very supportive and I feel more in touch with my professor than I ever did sitting in a classroom.
