...Part of me just can't shake ...See MoreHi, I'm about to be a senior in college majoring in elementary education with an interdisciplinary major in English language arts. I'll be completely my third field study this semester and student teaching the following semester. I've worked with fabulous elementary school students and have adored it, but...
...Part of me just can't shake the idea of wanting to teach high school English! The problem is, I just don't know which I would be happier teaching. I intend to finish out my major and have already passed all of the MTELs I need to take in order to be an elementary school teacher. As of now, my plan is to start teaching once I graduate before completing a master's program.
But what if I change my mind? What are my options? In order to teach high school English, will I need to take more undergraduate courses? I'm well aware that I will have to take another MTEL test, but how easy would it be for me to become certified in both elementary education as well as secondary English?
My second question is in regard to salary. I'm not looking for an exact answer here, just a range or approximation. I am currently living with my mother but intend to move out on my own once I begin teaching. I know this will not be for another year or so, but I am trying to get an idea of what sorts of properties I will be able to afford so I can make a game plan for myself. Approximately how much do new teachers make in Massachusetts AFTER taxes?

As for finding your own student teaching placement, I've never heard of that. Most colleges have established connections with various school districts. Is it an online school? I can't help you with that.
Good luck!

I'm looking at different post-bac teacher licensing programs and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with the one offered by Framingham State.
I'm also particularly interested in your assessment of the overall job prospects for elementary school teachers in the state.
If it helps any, I'm a male who will be changing careers...

I had my undergrad degree in Psychology and I was a counselor for a few years before deciding to go into education. I thought the program was great and prepared me well for teaching. It was intense at times, and although I worked full time at the beginning, I had to leave my job and work part time pretty quickly. After completing the program, I ended up getting a long term sub job at the school where I student taught, but they were not able to hire me full time because they were downsizing. I was then hired to teach at an urban charter school, where I still teach. A charter school was not my first choice due to longer days/year and other factors, but overall it has been a very good experience. It is definitely a tough job market for elementary teachers- there aren't a lot of jobs out there and you really need a foot in the door or a connection. But the field placements through FSC provide good connections, so take advantage of them and make yourself known and loved! I agree with Mary though, and sometimes doubt having gone the PBTL route because I still now need to get my Masters in order to get Professional Licensure. I feel like the PBTL program WAS grad school for me and I don't want to do it again! Anyway, good luck!
