Our 1st grader just got accepted to go to the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, MA. Does anyone have any pros/cons of this school? I taught in a charter school in NY for a couple months before I quit. It was a total, utter train wreck on every level. I know some are good and some are not.
I hold a BA in Psychology and am ready to start a master's program in Elementary Ed. After reading many posts on this site, I am starting to second guess my career path. It appears there aren't many jobs out there. If you had it to do over again, would you become a teacher?
I do know some middle-aged women career changers who have struggled to find jobs with Early Childhood and Elementary Ed certifications. I enjoyed volunteering in grade schools but I specifically chose math (grades 5-8 and 8-12) and moderate disabilities (grades 5-12) because I thought it would make me more marketable.
I still worry about budget cuts, but that would have been a problem in my old job also. Another year of two and I'll have some seniority and hopefully stay in teaching until I retire.
Best of luck with whatever way you go!

Teaching should be in your heart, your soul. You should know to your core that that is what you want to do. If you are undecided or wiffle waffly, then I don't think it's for you.

I have just published my first children's book, and using my talents as a Reading Specialist have developed interdisciplinary activities, as well as before, during, and after reading activities for the classroom. There are vocabulary activities and opportunities for your students to write to me about the book and its characters. I am glad to respond to those letters at your request. A physical disability permits me from teaching in the classroom anymore, so I am reaching out to students this way. The main goal of this book is also the part of my job I miss the most: instilling a love of reading and learning in each student. I can visit your classroom by Skype, if you wish, and our website is about to go online. There, you will be able to access the acitivities I spoke of earlier. The obok is called Harley Hits a Homer, and I am so pleased with the positive way it is being received in the classrooms where it is being used. I'd love to hear from you if you think we could work together on this project. I'd love to hear from your classes and to interact with them. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Let's keep them reading, Tena
