Hello, My husband is trying to get into teaching. He has a BA in psychology and did half a masters in special ed. He also passed the MTEL communication and literacy test (both reading and writing) and the general curriculum test (this was before they broke it into two so it is my understanding he does not need to do another math test). He took the ...See MoreHello, My husband is trying to get into teaching. He has a BA in psychology and did half a masters in special ed. He also passed the MTEL communication and literacy test (both reading and writing) and the general curriculum test (this was before they broke it into two so it is my understanding he does not need to do another math test). He took the foundation of reading test this summer but failed it. He wants to teach special ed, but it was my understanding that for a regular teaching license he didn't need to pass the FoR test so he decided to apply for just a general license right now with the goal to work on becoming a special ed teacher down the road.
We sent the application and then his transcripts afterwards back at the start of the summer and just got a rejection letter today. The letter says that he needs this for a preliminary elementary license: 1) pass the c&l skills test 2) courses on ways to prepare and maintain students with disabilities for general classrooms 3) pass the general curriculum test 4) courses that teach reading, English, language arts, and math 5) either pass the reading specialist test or foundations of reading test 6) pass the math subject test, general curriculum math subtest, middle school math test, or elemantary math test.
Okay so this is what has me confused. I thought he didn't need to do a teachers course for a preliminary license all he needed was a degree and to pass the mtel communication and literacy test and the general curriculum test.
