So I am currently unemployed and seeking out para jobs in NH because that's all I can seem to get callbacks for despite my excellent references. I worked as a para for two years, substituted in my district, and was a long term sub for 6 months up until the end of the school last year. No matter what I do I can't get any permanent teaching jobs! I keep having to take lesser quality jobs/pay and I can barely afford to live! Let alone pay back my student loans!
I am certified in the state of NH and already have my M. Ed in Elementary Education. My family keeps telling me to get licensed in MA since they supposedly REQUIRE a master's degree. NH does not require this and I feel that since a M.Ed puts you in a higher wage bracket, I get passed over so they don't have to pay me more money.
I'm not sure what road to go down for licensure in MA. As I mentioned,I already have a masters in Ed.
Does anyone who knows the MA system have any suggestions for which route would be the best option for me? I'm desperate! Thanks!
Nine-freaking-years and you're a certified s...See MoreYou are certified in special ed and math and you've been an assistant for 9 years? I honestly don't know much about NH since this is the Mass board, but it seems to me that you weren't trying that hard to get a job. My guess is you wanted to stay in a very small area or maybe only one district.
Nine-freaking-years and you're a certified sped teacher? No disrespect, but most people can't afford to live on a TA's salary, nor do they want to take 9 years to get a job.
If you went to Mass with those credentials, you would get a job a lot quicker than 9 years. I may not be the best job, but you could get one. My guess is that there is a need for a math/sped teacher somewhere in NH too.
To the OP: You may want to look into Mass or other nearby states. The thing about New England is that our states are kind of like counties in other parts of the country. If you lived in California, you could drive five hours in any direction and not leave the state, but in New England, there is another state an hour or so away and in some places, several states. I would advise you to expand your horizons as much as possible to get a job. You're elementary ed, so that is a problem. There are a lot of elem ed teachers out there. If you spoke Spanish or could teach sped, that would help...
Be willing to move. Like I said, in New England, you can move an hour from home and be in another state. In many parts of the country, no one blinks an eye about an 80 mile move. It's really just moving from one side of town to another. Also consider further afield. California and Nevada supposedly have teacher shortages.
