I am in desperate need of any last minute studying advice for the English MTEL. This will be my fourth time taking it and I keep missing by only 4 points. Any tips on the open response? Studying the MTEL practice tests just isn't cutting it.

Thanks Julie, I guess I will just take my chances; I am not feeling very confident about this. Were the multiple choice questions brutal as well?
Did anyone else take the ESL MTEL on 7/14? How did you feel about the open response questions? I was extremely confident after the multiple choice questions, but I completely bombed the first open response. It was beyond humiliating! I tried to recover, but my mind literally went blank. That has never really happened to me before. Anyway, just wondering what your thoughts were if you also took the test.
Hey Kim, I took the ESL MTEL and felt pretty good until the third open response where I had to take a side on paying extra for larger cars. I totally fumbled looking for words. Not an authentic blurb at all-- i felt totally uncomfortable face to face with the only other woman in the room.. did you speak the whole time
Looking for a 5th grade pen pal class. We are located in Weston, Florida, which is just west of Ft. Lauderdale. I will have 22-25 gifted students. We could be exchanging snail mail, emails, sharing projects. It's a lot of fun and the students love the experience. Please let me know if interested. Thanks!!!

Hello, I’m a licensed teacher who can ONLINE tutor for various MTEL exams (Communications and Literacy, General Curriculum, English, History, Political Science/Philosophy, and Humanities). Email me or visit my site for more info.
A question to people who have struggled with this test- and eventually passed- Do you have any advice? I have all the study guides, I have taken an MTEL prep cpurse- I am just crushed by this failure- I am done with all of my classes, all that remains is my practicum/student teaching, and I can't do that until I pass this MTEL.
Has anyone here struggled with passing the MTEL Foundations of Reading test?
Thanks, and for anyone taking this test, good luck!

For anyone trying to pass the Foundations of Reading Test: Check out any and all publications from the National Panel of Reading. Put Reading First. The Research Building Blocks for Teaching Children to Read. This particular publication outlines the 5 areas crucial for reading: Phonemic awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension. Another strategy that I used was to find any other state's practice foundation of reading tests that are online. Try taking the questions. Then focus on which areas you had difficulty. Best of Luck. Whereas I aced the Comm/Lit and Middle School Science MTELs, it took me two tries to pass Foundations of Reading.
Google 'mtel test prep elementary reading exam' and there's a thin red book which was written which is a prep book for this type of test but not any state specific (tho it makes reference to MA, CA, TX, etc..) As you read the book you fill out a chart in the back -- i.e., teaching decoding, teaching reading comprehension, teaching vocab, etc. to ELL students, upper elementary school students, etc. Essentially you are making a grid. Thus, you'll be better prepared for when you get a question: "what should be the first thing a 5th grade teacher does for an ELL student who is struggling with reading comprehesion?"
Also, when I took the Foundations of Reading test, approx. 20% of the practice test questions and BOTH of the essay questions were exactly the same as the practice test. So master that practice test as well!!
And finally, when in doubt, mark the answer that says "pre- teach" the info.
I am looking for someone to help me pass the MTEL Earth Science exam (14). I have taken it many times and have not been able to pass. Please contact me if you are able to help. Thanks.

If you live near the Boston area I would check with them. Otherwise my next step would have been to bribe the local college science department for some help.

2) Download the practice test and Multiple-Choice Questions Analysis.
3) Take the practice test and grade your answers.
4) Look at the explanations provided in the Multiple- Choice Questions Analysis document.
5) Identfy your strengths and weeknesses and use the study guides others have suggested.
6) Take the on-line test, reading the essay questions first and then take notes. As you take the test make notes of all the information that may pertain to the essay questions (include question number for quick reference). This will help with answering the essay questions (especially including the buzz words).
7) Manage your time.
I can't say definitively but I believe most people will be able to increae their scores by three or four points just by studying the explanations. These steps may be just enough to put you over the the top.
