But I recently took the MTEL Foundations of Reading test- and didn't pass. I'm devistated and feel like an utter failure. I will of course take it again- anyone here take that test and not pass the first time? The two essay questions threw me for a loop...

Besides the one mtel practice test, there is not much out there for "official" study materials. Does anyone have a good study guide or suggestions on how to study? I failed first time around and do not want to fail again.

Hi Pat, I was wondering if anyone answered your question about the study guide. I am looking for a study guide and possibly a tutor for the history exam 5-8. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks
I took the SEI exam back in January failed by only two points am currently preparing to retake in early May. I recommend you visit a blog (Surgical Strikes 2.0) SEI MTEL awesomeness There are lots of great tips as well as an outline of what to expect on the open response. Best of luck
I have taken this mtel about 5 times now and have gotten within two points the last two times! Talk about frustrating huh? Does anyone have any thoughts or helpful tips that could get me to that extra 2 points to get this over with!

Have you passed? I just re-took it on Monday for the 3rd time. I don't have any suggestions just wondering if you have any?
I just took the Communication and Literacy test, both subtests. Of course, I am over-analyzing everything! I finished my essay, but did not have time to read it over for spelling errors, structural issues. I have some good arguments, but as it was the end of the test, I don't know how well I articulated everything. I had two minutes to write my conclusion. Also, my summary was 165 words, not 150. In hindsight, with less "brain fog" hehe, I realized I should have taken out a certain sentence, but what is done is done! I made it three short paragraphs and probably should have done two. The article itself was 5 long paragraphs so I felt that I needed to include what I did. Anyway, I am freaking out that I won't pass because of the writing section. I think it is evident that I can write; however, there may be some mistakes-- do you think they will grade things more holistically? I would hate to have to take this test again as I already got a teaching job in Mass. I live in NY and passed all four NY State tests with flying colors...five years ago! It is a bit frustrating to already have a master's degree, teaching experience, NY State Certification, and then think I may not pass the MTEL....how tough are they in grading, do you think?
Also, did anyone receive their results before the score report date? The reading test was all multiple choice, so I'm wondering if perhaps the results will be in early. Thanks for reading! I'm just have a freak-out moment. With writing, I always need to revise and I took too long on the other sections.

I really hate SUBJECTIVE tests like this. Scored by a person who just may not like your writing style or point of view. The Open response is 20&37; of the test score, so you need to do somewhat okay on it to get a passing score. Remember a 240 is a passing score.
When I did my Comm. and Lit MTEL exam, I felt a little rushed, especially with all the reading for the MC sections. The short open response essay I had to rush and the long essay also. I could have written better essays had I had more time. In the end I got a Limited score for both open responses, but did well on the MC responses and passed.
They don't release the scores until the day that they say they will. Usually around 5 PM.
Is there any point going for a preliminary license (Boston area) in a field as low demand as History/ Social Studies?
If not, might I have a shot if I went through an initial licensure program first -- or does the Union pay scale for a doctorate price me out of this market perpetually?
Don't worry about the PhD (Chemistry). I have one and was able to find a job with a Preliminary license without ANY teaching experience. Schools like to boast that they have PhD's on their staff. You will have a more challenging time getting a job, but keep at it. You may have to take a long-term sub first.
Your pay is defined your degree, so you would be paid at a relatively high level PhD 1 year. You can't say I will take a lower pay to get my foot in the door. That is why they have a pay scale. Everyone get's paid based on their degree and experience.
