English (07) MTEL HELP

I am in desperate need of any last minute studying advice for the English MTEL. This will be my fourth time taking it and I keep missing by only 4 points. Any tips on the open response? Studying the MTEL practice tests just isn't cutting it.

It asked to explain what was going on, what was the message, use quotes and tell how irony played into it. Pretty straight-forward....BUT...I did not budget for time and rushed. 2nd essay asked to analyse heroism, tell about how it has been a major theme, tell about a hero, why was he/she important and why is this such an important theme.
