Any advice on passing the MTEL Foundations of Reading test?

I am a gradute student, and have recieved A's in all of my classes. I'm a good student, and feel I would make a good teacher. I did well on all of the MTELS, save for one- the MTEL Foundations of Reading test. I have taken the test 4 times, and each time have fallen short of passing. I feel o know the material. just the wording of the questions throws me off- there is usually more than one 'right' answer, just one is more right than the others.

A question to people who have struggled with this test- and eventually passed- Do you have any advice? I have all the study guides, I have taken an MTEL prep cpurse- I am just crushed by this failure- I am done with all of my classes, all that remains is my practicum/student teaching, and I can't do that until I pass this MTEL.

rr Hi Kim,

I am in the same boat as you. Have taken the test 4 times and I miss it by 2 or 3 points. I am frustrated and ready to throw a towel on my head. Because of my inability to pass this test, getting a job is getting tough. If you were able to get someone, please let me know. I will also look into it. I went for several worekshops, read the "Beating them all book" word to work, went for tutoring and I am doin't understand where I am missing the 3 points everytime I take the test. I am not sure if anymore workshops are goingto help me. I need to find out if someone can help me in the specific content area. I got full 100% on essays, and the first 2 sections. I am missing just on the reading comprehension multiple choice.

Someone out there is reading this message and has a good knowledge on this test, please respond. Thanks

Because I am a career changer and have a very limited background in education, I took an MTEL prep class at Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, MA. The teachers were great. I took the Foundations of Reading test last year and passed it on the first try. Because I am a career changer and have a very limited background in education, I took an MTEL prep class at Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, MA. The teachers were great. It was a lot of material, but they pointed out the most common errors on the test. I don't know how many people in the class passed, but I found it was well worth my money.

I would look into that program if you're in MA, or a similar one. Maybe BSU could give you some guidance if you are out of state.

For anyone trying to pass the Foundations of Reading Test: Check out any and all publications from the National Panel of Reading. Put Reading First. The Research Building Blocks for Teaching Children to Read. This particular publication outlines the 5 areas crucial for reading: Phonemic awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension. Another strategy that I used was to find any other state's practice foundation of reading tests that are online. Try taking the questions. Then focus on which areas you had difficulty. Best of Luck. Whereas I aced the Comm/Lit and Middle School Science MTELs, it took me two tries to pass Foundations of Reading.

Google 'mtel test prep elementary reading exam' and there's a thin red book which was written which is a prep book for this type of test but not any state specific (tho it makes reference to MA, CA, TX, etc..) As you read the book you fill out a chart in the back -- i.e., teaching decoding, teaching reading comprehension, teaching vocab, etc. to ELL students, upper elementary school students, etc. Essentially you are making a grid. Thus, you'll be better prepared for when you get a question: "what should be the first thing a 5th grade teacher does for an ELL student who is struggling with reading comprehesion?"

Also, when I took the Foundations of Reading test, approx. 20% of the practice test questions and BOTH of the essay questions were exactly the same as the practice test. So master that practice test as well!!

And finally, when in doubt, mark the answer that says "pre- teach" the info.
