I just got certified for teaching Phys Ed and Health in the state of Maryland. I currently live in NY, does anyone know of areas in MD that would be looking for those certifications.
Across America, young people are thinking and talking about equality. From the environmental justice movement to the trial of the Jena 6 – young people continue to come out in force, speaking their minds and making their voices heard on the issues they believe in. The National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights (NCRCR) is interested in hearing what today’s youth have to say about the question, “What does equality mean to you?†To that end, NCRCR seeks your assistance in reaching out to young people to let them know about our exciting essay and visual media contest.
In 1951, thirteen parents filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of their children, calling for their school district in Topeka, Kansas to reverse its policy of racial segregation. This landmark case, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954), established that "in the field of public education the doctrine of "separate but equal" has no place," making it illegal to segregate students on the basis of race. Brown v. Board was a milestone, helping to lay the groundwork for major victories in court, on the streets, and in the halls of Congress. Within a decade, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, banning discrimination in employment practices and public accommodations and soon afterward passed laws restoring and protecting voting rights and prohibiting racial discrimination in housing.
The concept of legal equality - the principle under which each person or group is subject to the same laws – remains a cornerstone of American life. Through legal and legislative battles over race, gender, orientation, the environment, health, education, age, housing, immigration, and disability issues, the struggle for equality continues. NCRCR invites young people between the ages of 14 and 18, to answer the question, “What does equality mean to you?†Participants can enter the contest in one of two ways – by sending an essay of no more than 750 words or submitting a visual media entry, such as an original photograph, drawing, or cartoon. Please contact NCRCR at [email removed].
We appreciate your support and assistance in distributing information about this contest to students.
Many thanks,

The National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights (NCRCR) is a non-partisan movement working to ensure that our courts protect and preserve equal justice, fairness, and opportunity. We achieve these goals through raising awareness, outreach, and building alliances. Recognizing how little information about the status of civil rights in the courts is reaching people across the country, NCRCR is focusing on public education and outreach, finding ways to get the message out about the impact of court rulings on our neighborhoods, our schools, our opportunities and our rights.

With all the hype, why aren't Maryland schools using student-centered learning, especially since they talk about it all the time. We all know there's no time allotted for this, so why do they encourage it....have meetings after school about it, etc.? Or maybe I'm not understanding it correctly and getting it confused with what's actually happening.

My advice is to backwards plan - what is it you reallllly realllly want the students to remember? Then look at your students and figure out their learning styles. Let's boil it down to the kid who loves handouts, the kid who loves to talk, the kid who loves to do research, and the kid who loves to make stuff. Which is the "right" way to teach the class? How can you set up your unit to address all 4 kids? Maybe you can't do it all in one day, but can you set it up so each kid has a chance to learn it the best way he learns?
As far as your teacher is concerned, perhaps he/she is teaching the way he/she learns best or is just as confused as you are about how best to implement student centered learning.
I will soon be starting a Postcard lesson to learn about the 50 states. I am hoping to receive a postcard from every state with a state fact written on it.... can someone please send us one from MD?
Thanks in advance!

I teach in VA but have moved closer to the Washington County MD area. I noticed a job fair was coming up and I was curious about the area. What is the teaching atmosphere like? Are there budget concerns that limit hiring? Any help/advice is appreciated!

Washington County is a large county that is very diverse. It has schools that are very much innercity schools although not to the same extent as say Baltimore, it has schools with all of the problems that schools in rural america have and it has some schools that are much like suburbia.
Overall, I think the WCPS is a good place to work. New teachers and new to the county teachers have a lot of support so they can get off to the right start.
I would say that any school district in the US has some budget concerns right about now but I also think that WCPS probably has less than most other counties in MD.
I would suggest that you go to the job fair. Openings will depend on your area of certification. Good luck and feel free to ask me any other questions.

It's hard to say, but the same thing has happened to me and I have credible experience and a certification. You can call the HR offices and ask for the person that hires for ESL, someone will usually talk to you. A lot of people have suggested just emailing principals. Go to job fairs, etc. I think it is early in the year for next year jobs and it is incredibly difficult to land a teaching job now, there have been major cuts, etc. Good luck!
