I am looking for a teacher in Maryland to join my postcard exchange for the 10-11 school year. This is a highly organized exchange and has been going strong for 6+ years. Please email me if you are interested or have questions! Thanks in advance!
I have done a screening interview with Washington County. I am certified in Special Education K-12. I was wondering when the hiring process will begin there. I never got any call backs last year and I was hoping for better this year. If anyone knows more about this please let me know. Thanks WV teacher
Hi! I work in Washington County and I might be able to give you some information.
There is a magic date, I think it is June 15, it might be as late as June 30. Up to that date, teachers are moved around within the county as they interview and hired for available jobs. Of course, a teacher moving to another school creates an opening in their original school which starts that process over again. Until that date, no jobs can be offered to anyone who is not already an employee of the county. This is in our contract. You can be screened though as you said you already were and I think (although I might be wrong on this one) that you can be interviewed by principals but they cannot offer a job until after the magic date.
I was interviewed and hired after the magic date when I came here and I had been screened in April. My advice is to call and or email all of the principals and let them know you have been screened and are available for interviews. Their names and numbers are on the county website. Starting this week, buildings are only open Mon-Thus though for the entire summer. When I was hired, I had emailed every principal in the county, they all told me that it kept my name fresh in their minds for when they were ready to interview.
By the way, after you are screened, acopy of your file goes to any prin who tells HR that they have a sped opening.
Good luck and if I can offer any assistance, let me know.
meThanks for the great response. I have not emailed anyone yet. I may try that starting next week. Details of the research: Initial group meeting, telling a minimum of four stories with an individual interview after the first two and on after the second two, and a final group meeting.
I will schedule practice sessions if and when you wish, you may use a pseudonym for the research. If at all possible I would like to have the initial meeting this summer.
I was a teacher for many years and I think that storytelling in the classroom has a great deal to offer to teachers and students.

I definitely have some criticisms of this program, but overall it was good and I wouldn't have been able to do this transition to teaching elementary school with any of the other programs that are available because they took too long to get paid and I support a family. Baltimore City has a similar resident teacher program, but otherwise I don't know of any counties that have it. For Prince George's County, you are too late for this year--and the program was cut way back to about 50 people. I have no idea what they're going to do next year or if they'll even have it, but if you google Prince George's County Resident Teacher Program (or Baltimore City) you'll find what you're looking for.
Good luck. You're making a difficult move and I want to remind you that teaching is a VERY VERY hard job that requires more time and mental energy than anyone can explain. (I liken it to becoming a parent, nobody can tell you how hard it is, you have to try it yourself to really understand)

The Johns Hopkins School of Education offers a part-time, flexible Master of Arts in Teaching for Elementary Education certification. Courses are offered during the evening at our Columbia, MD location. Our FlexMAT program places their interns in Howard and Anne Arundel counties mostly. Some of our other MAT options place interns in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Montgomery County. Please feel welcome to contact me for more information or visit our website.
