I teach a 5 day a week prekindergarten class and just got a 4 year old student from India who speaks no English and very little of his native language. I have little experience with ESL, and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions about how to help him. Since he is only 4, I am thinking that maybe I will just start at the beginning like I would with a toddler and teach him the words for things. My concern is that when I am not able to give him individual attention, he will be bored because he will not understand the book we are reading, or what I am talking about, etc. I have tried using some sign language, which is helping a bit, because he is reluctant to talk in class. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
Meg Jen, Songs are a great way to get any child active and thinking. All of my me ELL students are always actively engaged. Pictures, real items, any tactile examples.

Also, make an effort to learn something about India and relate it....snacks might be a great way to bridge a gap.
