My graduate courses focused alot on student-centered learning, however, during my internship at an elementary school, all I saw was teacher-centered. Although my mentor tried to differentiate at times, which I thought was similar to student-centered (but probably not), most of the time we followed a lesson plan that had the teacher model, then explain, then the students tried problems on their own. Much of the literature I read, books from the bookstore on effective teaching practices and strategies, seem to be more student-centered.

With all the hype, why aren't Maryland schools using student-centered learning, especially since they talk about it all the time. We all know there's no time allotted for this, so why do they encourage it....have meetings after school about it, etc.? Or maybe I'm not understanding it correctly and getting it confused with what's actually happening.
kmorla Ericka, Student centered learning is a habit that you have to get into. I teach at the high school level. Before I do a student centered activity, I first have to teach how to do the activity.
