I really hope that there is firm action being put in place to correct this injustice. I cannot believe that the state of Maine would employ people with such incredible bad judgment as to harass children of men and women serving the duty their country has asked them to perform. Regardless of anyone’s belief about the impending war on IRAQ, opinions should not be forced upon children and especially children of parents who are to be deployed overseas. Could you imagine one of those parents being killed while doing their sworn duties, and their families left behind being told that their parent who was killed was evil and unethical. It is horrible, the teachers responsible for this action should be removed from their positions, lose their credentials to teach, and have their retirements cut off. Personally, I do not believe we should be launching a war on IRAQ. I will however support the people our country sends to do the job, people in the military do not have the option to say no, they follow orders. It is our duty as citizens and human beings to support our soldiers regardless of the circumstances, we as a country do not need another VIETNAM with so called peace lovers spitting at our soldiers, treating them like plagued individuals and excluding them from a normal life just for performing the duty we asked them to perform. I feel strongly that this injustice should be dealt with swiftly before these teachers corrupt another generation of children. I am sure you will find it in your heart and mind to take action on these treasonous people within your teaching institutes.
Yep. However, it is up to the "men" and women to understand, voice their opinions and force change in laws/policies that they consider to be immoral or unjust. Remember, it was once law to keep a human being in slavery based on his/her race. Remember, it was once law to prevent women from voting. It was once law to allow the precious children you keep ranting about here to work 12-15 hours a day in dangerous mills. What changed these laws? Mindless automotons? Nope. The "men".

Feel free to change the laws that you consider immoral or unjust. I support your efforts IF you can get enough support from your fellow Americans to legally change those laws, rather than ignore them.
However, UNTIL you garner enough support to change those laws, they ARE what governs our nation and we, as a society, have made a compact to obey those laws. No citizen has the legal right to pick and choose which laws they will obey and which they can disobey.
The conduct of the teachers in some Maine schools is shameful and borders on treason.
What irony that on the same day that Fred Rogers should passaway that the teachers of Maine should set a new standard for abuse of children.
Canada is not far away from you. Please consider relocating so that a positive, modivated, and patriot American can take you place and have a positive impact on someones life, instead of scaring them forever as you have done.
I am astonished at the low level of discussion in this chat room....arguing, baiting, and taunting....I do believe many of you are as immature as my 8th graders....Are all of you really teaching in classrooms? In schools? In America? Whew!

Please read the Bangor Daily News March 1, 2003 editorial entitled "Fire in the Hole" from the following site....To denigrate all Maine school personnel based on what one or two or even a few persons may have done is unconscionable. The media has blown all of this waaaaaay out of porportion. It is hard for me to believe that so many can jump on this bandwagon of accusations without knowing the facts. Does all of America really believe everything they hear from Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly? For goodness sake, get a grip. Educators certainly have more integrity than this. To accuse the teachers of the entire state of Maine as being negative to our beloved troops is patently wrong.
[link removed]
In part, the editorial says... "The furor that has engulfed this state the last few days - the one about Maine schoolteachers harassing and taunting the children of military personnel - will one day serve as a textbook example of a how a mistake turns into a media frenzy. Today, it is just hurtful." "For amazing, eye-popping journalism designed to fire emotions and spark vigorous comment, this story has it all. Except for facts. The Guard will not make public, or even make known to education officials, what teachers allegedly taunted pupils or even what schools harbor such rotten behavior. That horrid teacher's assistant could be anywhere or nowhere." "Meanwhile, in what must be a first for school-based outrages, no irate parent, aunt, uncle or grandparent has come forward to put any sort of face to what remains faceless rumor." "the Guard inadvertently left a live grenade lying around and the national media ran by and pulled the pin, wounding the state and a profession."
Please seek out the entire editorial, do some research, and cease blaming the wonderful teachers of Maine for something they certainly had no part of.
To all the Maine teachers, Teachers Union and to the National Guard:
For the teachers who claim this was all exaggarated, and there is nothing to it, and for the NG who now starts to kiss up to these teachers by blaming the media for blowing this up I say please ask the NG colonel why did he go on the most watched nightly show, "The O'Reilly Factor"???????? Surely he is intelligent enough to realize that by going on a show who is watched by 2.7 million viewers nightly that this will spread all over the world like wild fire. He should've stuck with his local newspaper or maybe local TV stations. We military, retired military and civilian people were outraged, we felt for these military kids, and we supported them and their parents. The NG colonel got that ball rolling by going on the O'Reilly show. So direct your anger at him for exposing this on the O'Reilly show, HE got in touch with them and agreed to go on The Factor. Nobody FORCED him to go there. National Guard people don't blame the media ask your colonel why he went on the O'Reilly show of all shows if there is nothing to it.
AMEN to that! (Got to get that in quick before NO RELIGION ZONE signs are posted inside and outside the schools)

Dear 'Give me proof', Since you seem incapable of doing some simple research and are unable to access the most widely distributed and widely respected media outlets on both ends of the political spectrum, I have listed them for your convenience. All have run articles on the harassment of young students whose parents have been deployed.
I guess you're missing the point here. The mere implication of these allegations should end shivers up the spine of every responsible teacher with any semblance of compassion and humanity, regardless of their political beliefs. From a purely selfish perspective, Maine's teachers have a responsiblity to themselves (not to mention the children) to speak out against the acts of their "rogue" colleagues, else their silence will imply tacit approval. Your defensive tone and blind ignorance of the situation only hurts the teachers' reputations more.
Typical. You people simply deny what you don't like and rush to embrace what you do. Facts have no place in your world. Every major news organization has reported on this and not one claims it was made up. Not one. But, the truth means nothing in your world.

The truth be known is that the School Dept. is just pushing the agenda of the Dept Of Human Services in the state of Maine.(they work hand in hand) they have stated their hate and discontent for Military Personnel. Sorry to say as long as everyone sits back does nothing, NOTHING will be done about it. and they know with enough time it too will go away. if you don't believe me Just look at the Logan Marr story. that 5yr old (a brave girl gave her all for eform)killed at the hands of the state professional's. Because they are the only ones ENLIGHTENED. so all of you mainers just sit in you homes thinking you are safe. Don't worry they will get around to your family. after all we all know how scared of standing up you all are. even if it means your children. Mainers couldnt get togather enough people with a back bone to run a kool-aid stand of one. you Get what you pay for and elect into office. so there it is in a nut shell. all talk big behind the states back but no show to stand up to them. complete lack of back bone. so stop complaining till you do something about your own house.
I was amazed at how many people lashed out at all "Maine teachers" instead of going directly to the problem. Some people said they were not moving to Maine, some were not buying Maine products anymore and some just made absurd comments. Yes, we all have a right to our opinion, but let's make sure we're addressing the problem and not making a bigger one! As educators, we know our boundaries, but apparently some teachers made a huge mistake. So, although I agree they made an extremely bad decision, if it is ALL true, we can't blame the world or the state of Maine for their choices!
Former sane person: Are you medicated? It was clear to any thinking person the author below is referring to the address that was not covered by the major networks last year. No-one is taking you seriously. Your rantings and illogical thinking make that an impossibility. Pay closer attention to your references to Presidential Cookie coverage, I dont think so.

Can't we?
What has the State of Maine done about these acts? Has it fired the teachers who made these statements? Has it suspended them? Has it made their names public and forced them to take "sensitivity training"?
The State of Maine is responsible for the actions taken by people employed by it. How it handles that responsibility is directly proportional to the amount of heat it, and the people of Maine, take.
Reading (or perhaps "wading" would be more a propos) through these posts, I find that I am quite frankly DISGUSTED by how brainwashed all you "Proud Americans" seem to be by The Shrub (a.k.a. - Bush) and his illegimate regime. In the past 18 months, I have seen us change from a country that valued freedom and political differences to a near totalitarian state that squashes our freedoms little by little in the mistaken name of Homeland Security while it's citizens stand by and do NOTHING. "Oh, if it's for National Security, it MUST be right. Oh, sure, take more of my freedoms away that the revolutionaries of 1700's fought and died for...sure Mr. Shrub, I give up most of my civil rights in the name of Homeland Security so that you and your Regime can continue snipping away at the last of our rights of privacy. Oh, yes, Mr. Shrub, I'll gladly give up more of my privacy and civil rights so that our country can be safe from a VERY small number of obviously deranged but also wholly anomolic terrorists...Yes, Mr. Shrub, please start a pre-emptive war in Iraq that 95% of the world is against, so that you and your cronies can control a good part of MId-East oil flow. Never mind that it might start a third world war. Oh, what's that, Mr. Shrub - you say you don't really like North Korea either? Okay, go and bomb them too. Anything you like, Mr. Shrub, because I have no backbone and will support everything you and your War Regime want to do." WAKE UP, people!!! Can't you see that you are being brainwashed by the likes of bush, rumsfeld, ashcroft, ridge, et al?? It seems this country is being swept by a new type of McCarthyism that is even more vile and disgusting than that started by the original McCarthy. If you want to see what America has become, then look upon the outskirts of any medium size town or city in the country and you will find endless rows of huge, "bigger is better" Wal-Marts, Home-Depots, Michaels, Bed & Baths, Best-Buys, Targets, Taco-Bells, and Seven-Elevens. Except what is happening is that these strips, these burgeoning shrines to capitalism gone crazy are no longer the "outskirts" - they are, in fact, BECOMING the NEW USA. To our children, these "strips" ARE the new villages. I find that progression vile. And this war that so many of you seem in support of, is NOT about defending our own land, it has NOTHING to do with that. It is about Power Strongholds. This juggernaut of an economy of ours, this "Bigger Is Better, Faster Is Finer" counrty is propelled by oil. Gaining a stronghold in the mideast oil market would give our oligarchy a much larger foothold to spread their already burgeoning corporate and political imperialism. We, the NEW USA, are becoming the bully of the sandlot, headed by the Shrub and his cronies and multitudes of blinded and brainwashed citizens falling in lockstep behind the Regime. The terror that WE bring to the world is ultra-capitalism backed by bombs. Will some of us wake up to it before it is too late???? Viva la revolucion!!! Pwr2thePpl!! Buck G. Fush

Hey NG you always help/assist the "active duty" military which is greatly appreciated by us, and the Civilian communities as in disasters etc. which is not greatly appreciated right now by some of the teachers in Maine. If we can be of any help to you please don't hesitate to ask. We soldiers need to stand up for our kids, and need to bring these teachers to justice. I can't believe we're defending and fighting for people like that. How can our children respect us if you let this go to sleep?? These wimpy, heartless teachers need to be brought to justice. Real men, women, and teachers would not say garbage like that to our kids. If the draft will be re-instated, and don't be to sure it wont, I hope these "teachers" ha, ha, will be called to the front line that is if they're not to old, but their sonny boys might be called. Canada watch out you will be overcrowded with all the draft dodgers seeking "permanent" residence for don't forget Carter is not in office anymore, and the next president/presidents might wont give these traitors amnesty.
Blackhawk "career soldier" "active duty" AND DAMN PROUD OF IT, our commander would have a different kind of "follow up" I guarentee you.
