Hello, I am reading on the main teacher's chatboard that many teachers would like to exchange postcards with other countries and states. I would just like to know what is the real value in this - oh yes, maybe the beauty of the picture but definitely the children absolutely won't learn any knowledge from it. Why don't you organize a general knowledge club in your school for the gifted ones, the ones who are anxious to learn. I will send you few examples - questions from general knowledge to show you what I mean. I am suggesting it because when I have a chance to talk to a High School student in my area about the subjects that she or he is learning in school her/his knowledge is very limited or an absolute "O". 1. "If God did not exist, man would be obliged to invent Him". Who said that ? 2. Her enemies called her "Madam defficit". Who was She ? 3. The families of non-metals are not good electric conductors except one. Which one ? 4. When a male is born with two Y chromosomes and one X, explain what could be the problem with this male ? 5. Where does the name "Algebra" come from ? 6. What is the central chemical laboratory in the human body ? 7. Could you tell what changes oxygen in the higher altitude above the earth to ozone ? 8. Could you name a very famous private club in the 1700AD. in France ? 9. Name the two independent countries in Africa in 1934. 10. What did the Curies discover in pitchblende ? 11. What magnetizes our planet ? 12. Where is the Taiga ? Name the climate. 13. What is the red pigment in the blood, that contains iron, and occurs in vertebrate red blood cells ? 14. Los Angeles is a fast growing city. The greatest problem is to find fresh water for the growing population. Do you have any suggestion, or solution to solve the problem ? 15. The birthplace of European civilization. 16. When you are sitting very still, you are still moving. Explain why is so ? 17. How the human brain can remember that 2+2=4 ? 18. Where do you find Mesopotamia in S.America ? 19. Who built the Suez Canal ? 20. In Greek mythology, one of the tribe of warllike women lived in Asia Minor. Do you know the name ? Life can be experienced only by swimming in the complete flow of knowledge.
Interested in learning what other physical education teachers are using for curriculum in Maine. I'm using the CATCH, Physical Dimensions/Essentials and other material etc. What do you recommend?
Help! I have an English degree, but cannot find a job! (I still need to do my student teaching.) I am about to get another undergrad degree in Spanish so I can hopefully find a position doing what I love... My question is whether it will be easier to find a job teaching Spanish? I have experience teaching ESL and Spanish, but lack all of the courses and certification. Thank you in advance! Jeff [email removed]

I am interested in relocating to ME (Bangor, Calais, Ellsworth areas) to teach Sped. Basically, here are my questions: - How much do ME teachers pay into teachers retirement? - Do ME teachers have to pay into social security (in some states, they don't) - Will ME districts give step credit for at least 10 years certified teaching experience? - How much are teachers in ME expected to pay for helath insurance premiums (for a family plan)?
Is it true that many SS and History teaching positions in middle and high schools are "resolved" for coaches? Also, how does one become an athletic coach? Logically, one would have played a varsity sport in high school and/or college and be young enough to coach it. I am not aware of any need to be certified in coaching as one would need to be in an academic discipline. So, are coaching assignments awarded to those teachers who are able and willing?
Do teachers in Maine pay into social security? When a teacher retires from a Maine district, does he/she get s.s. AND the teaching pension? I realize that the states have different arrangements about this issue; for ex., if you teach in Texas, you give up all of your previously earned social security and get only the teaching pension.

I taught French in Maine for 3 years. Not being able to collect S.S. retirement + the pitable teacher salaries in Maine are the reasons I left. I'm now in Florida, which has a lot of issues relating to work, but my school district pays my retirement 100% and I'll also be able to collect S.S. retirement. I'm on step 7 here, and in 2 years I will surpass what the most veteran teacher earns in my former school district in Maine. Salaries in my district top off at $64,000 (it takes 20 years to get there, but ...) Sometimes I miss the scenery, the lack of traffic congestion, and the friendly people in Maine, but I can't afford to teach there!
I am looking for a Retired teacher that volunteers. I saw a pamphlet at my local library for MRTA. This is as close as I could find to that web site. My 8 year-old needs someone that knows the Piano....right now were learning together.

What kinds of screening tools does your district use? Do you have any special advice/favorites/etc.? Does anyone use DIAL-3? If so, would you share your opinion? Thanks.
