I am in the process of transferring my certification to Maine from New Jersey.I have my MA and have been teaching for 2 years, working in schools for over 5.
There is a class called "Teaching Exceptional Children" that is a requirement. What is this class? In NJ we are inclusive and we modify work for all learning needs. Is that what this class is about?
Also, how common is a Responsive Classroom in Maine?
Exceptionality is a requirement for Maine certification, but you may be able to get a one year dispensation where you are transferring from another state and are already certified. I believe, but am not sure, that Maine and NJ have reciprocal certificaton. The best thing is to call the Dept. of Certification at 1 -207-624-6603 and ask. If you have to take Exceptionality, it is offered on every campus in the University of Maine system that offers an ed. major, as well as USM, Thomas, St. Joseph, and who knows where else. The Cert Dept. could probably tell you that, too. The good news is, it is often offered as an on-line or video course, and is usually offered somewhere in the summer. If you let me know what area of the state you are moving to, i can probably point you toward a campus.

I took the course online from UCLA Ext. but it was called Different Needs Learners or something like that. You do need to get the course approved prior to taking it if it's an online course. I can give you more specifics if you'd like.
I need your input on the discussion board I have started. Please click on the link and see what you think? Maybe you will have a topic to add, join the members, and time to read some of the other posts. I hope you will make it a place to visit and share ideas.

I am looking for information about a Kinder Kamp program that we heard about at the recent Title I Conference at the Samoset. The program was funded by the Barbara Bush Foundation I think. One of the school districts spoke about their program at one of the seminars. I would like to know about your program how it is run and where we can apply for funding. Thanks so much!!!
Greetings. Would anyone like to volunteer to speak to a group of 25 seniors (60+) who are Foster Grandparents (work with kids in schools) on childhood education subject? Please call us at 207 973 3696.
The CANE (Classical Association of New England) Summer Institute is an annual week-long seminar, which has been held at Dartmouth College for the past 25 years. It is a series of lectures, courses, and special events aimed at adults interested in the ancient world. This year, the CANE Summer Institute will take place from July 9-14, and the theme this is "Beyond Antiquity: The Legacy of the Classical World". Topics will include the ancient origins of democracy, the influence of classics on America's founders, the influence of Greek and Latin literature on World War I British poets and on the Renaissance, the Spanish use of Roman models of government in the New World, and classicizing art and architecture. The faculty is drawn from senior scholars at outstanding colleges and universities, who not only teach, but also share a dormitory and cafeteria with participants, living and working together in a uniquely collegial and stimulating atmosphere.
CSI has a double mission. We aim to make classical studies available to the general public, both to provide personal enrichment and to promote the classics in the cultural life of our communities. We also aim to provide teachers of the humanities with material and insights useful in their classrooms, and also with the opportunity to study at an adult level, converse with their colleagues, and refresh themselves professionally.
The Institute is a bargain, at $485 for room, board and tuition for the week (and even less for commuters who do not stay on the Dartmouth campus for the week). Much more information and registration forms are available at the site linked below.

I have a friend who is a great teacher. She got an oui in 2001 and has been sober since (AA meetings, etc.) She is worried about losing her job because of Baldacci's restructuring of school districts. What are ur thoughts (she has taught in the same district for nine years and has quite a bit of seniority). Does anyon know if districts hire teachers w/previous oui's?
