The American Turkish Society's Education Program is pleased to announce the availability of Curriculum Development Grants for 2011.
The program, which was initiated by The Society in the spring of 2010, offers funds to elementary and secondary school teachers to develop innovative curricula, projects and other classroom activities about Turkey. The Society’s first Curriculum Development Grant was awarded to Harry A. Dawe, former Headmaster of Robert College in Istanbul and current history teacher and college counselor at the Fieldston Upper School in Bronx, New York. Mr. Dawe received support for History 181: East Meets West, for which he developed course material and two chapters of a history text book for use with eleventh and twelfth graders.
Grants vary between $250 and $2,500, and cover the costs of research, materials, speakers, and other expenses incurred by the school or the teacher. The amount of each grant is determined by the project’s scope, the availability of total funds, and the number of projects selected through a competitive process. The American Turkish Society encourages all applicants to identify additional sources of funding where possible. Once selected, grantees will be free to develop their proposed projects without editorial input from The Society. They will, however, participate in follow-up activities for evaluation purposes and will be asked to share any teaching plans, materials and activities with The American Turkish Society for future dissemination.
Application Process: Spring Semester, 2011
Application deadline: November 1 Notification: December 1
Please submit proposals including:
1. A 2-page summary of the proposed project detailing the tools, materials, and methods to be used; the objectives and anticipated impact; and the teacher's relevant qualifications; 2. A project budget, including a detailed breakdown of costs and the grant amount requested; 3. The teacher’s CV; and 4. A letter of support from the teacher’s school.
Interested parties should send proposals to The American Turkish Society at [email removed].

I attended Detroit Public Schools. Wayne Elementary, Arthur Junior High and graduated from Denby High in 1974. There were several wonderful teachers that I would like to perhaps send a note of appreciation. Where can I locate retired teachers? Thank you.

I would like to take my 6th grade class on an end of the year class trip (has to be in state because of travel restrictions). I am looking to do something possibly up north that has a mix of history and also something fun to do. Any ideas?

DPS current salary schedule is on the website [link removed].
with your same experience and degree started off at a step 4 with a master degree and remember you have to pay back 250.00 out of every pay check until next october as part of the early termination incentive program. Also, be aware of the priority schools because they are the only ones you will get placement in and things are definitely rough in a lot of those schools right now.
The same jobs that the district pays Frontline to place on AESOP; Frontline requires a fee from the Subs to see those job offers before a non-paying Sub. In my Math class this adds up to big $$$ for Frontline.
Frontline/AESOP will not allow any competition from other programs. Little threats go out warning the Subs not to use any other programs that will enable them to get a job. “Only Jobulator” can be used to enable the Sub to get a job. Now, in my Law class there is a name for such a practice.
When a Sub applies to a district they must fill out an application/ get fingerprinted and get approved by administration to start work. They receive their CHECK FROM the School District . Subs are not employed by AESOP/FRONTLINE! But AESOP/FRONTLINE requires money from the Subs for their program Jobulator. It cost $40 a year. Frontline also gets paid from the school district. They are getting paid twice!! How many jobs do they fill in a year? That times $40. Of course you can only purchase Jobulator, that will work on AESOP.
Oh, if you are going to tell us, we don’t have to purchase Jobulator, it’s up to the Subs, you are right! But than you don’t work, or just wait until the left-over, last minutes arrive on AESOP. Some districts are catching on to FRONTLINE/AESOP, because their Subs are alerting them. If your district is not up to date, advise them what is going on.
This year's symposium addresses higher education in the 21st century using the German concept of bildung. Bildung was originally used by the Germans to refer to learning as a distinct form of education centered on the spiritual and/or aesthetic aspects of life.
The speakers will address the philosophical, theoretical, legal, socio-economic and historical influences of higher education in the current century compared to previous centuries. They also will examine the purpose and value of a college education in the early 21st century and argue the role of alternative schooling.
The symposium is free and open to the public however parking is $4.75. For a complete list of symposium speakers, topics and information about the Humanities Center, visit our website.
