Does anyone know of MI districts that pay their subs directly instead of contracting them out? I need to find one that pays into the MI retirement system. Thanks!
If a Michigan teacher suspects a child in her third grade class may have a learning disability (dyslexia) is she allowed to suggest to the child's parents that the child be tested and/or recommend to the school the child be tested?
meDo you have a child study team at your school? At my school, we would mention it to the special education teacher, who would then give you a form to fill out that asks what kind of things you've tried to help the student and what the results were. At that point, the parents would be contacted.
I have a 6-12 social studies teaching certificate in the state of Michigan with an RX endorsement. I have never taught in Michigan and have been living in Chicago for the past four years.
I am about to complete my masters degree in library media and would like to add this endorsement to my Michigan certificate. I know that I needed to be certified in first aid and CPR to receive my initial teaching certificate but I am unsure if I need to re-certify to add the ND endorsement. I would appreciate any help from those that have been in a similar situation.

I am moving to MI in about a year. What does the job market look like for special ed teaching jobs, specifically Learning Disability and Emotional Disability (those are the two MI endorsements I think I can get in MI)? I have five years experience in Illinois. I am willing to do Charter, but would obviously prefer public. I would likely be in Metro Detroit. I know the job market in MI isn't very good in general for teachers, but my move can't be helped, so I'm coming either way.
Honestly, the job market does not look great. It has been bad for years yet the colleges keep pumping out more teachers. In addition, schools have been cutting or simply not replacing teachers who retire. That is not to say you wont find a job, however, it will not likely be your dream job.
Hi Michaganders! I'm a teacher from Florida who saw the HLN report this morning about the district that is being sued by the ACLU. Can you tell your side of the story for me? Thanks, Debbie

I have been in Corporate America for over 12 years a...See MoreI have my BBA and now working on my MBA (25% completed). I want to work in higher education or work with high school students either as a Teacher or a guidance counselor. I was told I could get certificate in a subject. How can I get certified? Where would I start to become an educator?
I have been in Corporate America for over 12 years and finally realized this field is not for me.
You would need to attend a University's school of education and complete a certification program. They have programs that could result in another Bachelors, a Masters, or just simply a certificate. You would also need to complete (unpaid) student teaching as part of your program. You would also need to have enough credits to equal a major and perhaps a minor in a specific subject taught at high school. If BBA means Bachelors of Business Admin, then you will likely be looking at teaching business ed, but not knowing your specific college transcripts, its difficult to say. There is also a testing regimen you must complete to become a teacher in Michigan,or any other state for that matter.
That said, you should be aware that the job market for teachers in Michigan is very, very, very bad. It ranges from impossible to find a job in certain fields, like Social Studies, English, and Elementary Education, to really hard to find a job, in fields like Special Ed or Math. The jobs that are available are usually in poor paying, inner city Charter schools. It would be highly unlikely that you would find a job in a nice, middle-class public school. Career changers are frequently disappointed after spending a couple of years and thousands of dollars on a new degree to find that they either cannot find a job, or are stuck teaching in a very poor paying and rough environment.
Other states have historically offered more opportunity to Michigan-trained teachers. Long ago, I taught in Chicago Public Schools, as they had a hard time recruiting teacher to work in the inner-city. Districts from Nevada, North Carolina, Texas, Florida, NYC, and others used to come to Michigan and recruit, but the economy has been tough all over, and I haven't heard about large scale, out-of-state recruitment in some time. There still may be some opportunity out of state, but you would have to look for it after becoming a teacher.
