I'm moving from Texas to MI next year and hope to find a middle school math job. I know having a masters degree gives you a big pay jump in MI (it doesn't get you hardly anything in TX) and was wondering if online degrees are acceptable by most districts? I don't want to start a degree program here then move and lose hours so an online degree would be perfect. Here are my questions... 1) Are online degrees widely accepted? 2) Do you know of any good online degree universities? 3) Does it matter if I get a M.Ed or MAT? (I only plan on teaching not administration or counseling) 4) Are middle school math jobs hard to come by in Macomb and surrounding area?

Thank you so much for your help!
RP My district will not accept an online masters. Yes, it is very difficult to get a job anywhere in MI. You may be ok because of Math. If the Governor's proposal passes there should be many openings. This proposal is to encourage those with 30 + years to retire. Good luck to you. Hopefully you like gloomy, snowy days!!!

sorry I'm sorry to tell you this, but, from my experience an online degree is worth little. Even worse, there are few jobs. I would not start a masters program until I found out if I could even find employment in Michigan. Fact is, there are many certified teachers working for $9-10 per hour with no benefits as parapros/teachers aides waiting for jobs in...See More

IN Teacher Don't move to MI expecting a teaching job. I drive over one hour (closer to 2 when it snows) to a school out of state, and have done it now for nearly 3 years. There are TONS of folks looking to teach here.

I do have a master's I obtained online, but it is up the district to decide on if they will accept it. Stay away from the Diploma mill...See More

Tania go to the michigan department of education website--they have a list of approved universities and programs that have acceptable degree programs--some online too. Oh and you can check out every public school reports card too! This way you can better target your job search to the type of school climate in which you want to work. Many of our major uni...See More

Ed. Leadership On the topic of gettin' your masters... I did the footwork, and the cheapest University is Saginaw Valley State U. I'll save about $3,000 by going though them (as opposed to Marygrove (which is all online by the way), MSU, or other biggies) and they have satellite campuses all over the place. They don't have many online classes, but that's ok with ...See More
