moving to Michigan?

my wife, family and I are looking at moving to Michigan next summer. Are there ever an teaching jobs open in the WEstern part? We live in Texas now and it is difficult to research jobs living so far away. I know the state is having a financial crissis, but what state isn't! We want to move to be closer to family. I would not be picky about location, just somewhere in the Western part of mi. Allegan is where we have family. Thanks for your help.

Pam Honestly, the job prospects in West Michigan aren't that great...and I live in West Michigan, so I know about it. I don't know what subject areas you have certifications in, but that also makes a difference. I wouldn't! Don't move here without a job in hand. I live in Western Michigan, but close to the Indiana border, moving here in 2007 thanks to a spouse's job as and I still drive an hour one way to work in Indiana, because in the last three years NO jobs in my area has opened up. Elementary is the worst area to try to find a job in, secondary English and science are probably a little better but not much.

There are teaching jobs here, especaily because we just had a retirement incentive pass, There are not many but there are some. However the competition is very fierce because there are hundreds of other qualified applicants. I personally applied for several jobs this year where there were over 2500 resumes for EACH position. The last statistic I heard was that in 2007, 75% of new teachers graduating would not find teaching jobs here.

Within the past few years most school disticts have cut jobs and/or closed schools, so as a beginning teacher you don't have much job security. Many teachers who finally find jobs get laid off a few years in.

All that said, Michigan is a great place to live, and if you can find something here it may be worth the move, especailly if you have family here. But moving here expecting to sub and support a family and expect to "get your foot in the door" and get a teaching job in that district the next year would probably be a mistake, as would moving here with no job lined up.

taught 4th I was one that retired. There were 20 in all. Seven new people were hired in. 4 in sp. ed., 2 kdg., and 1 at the high school level. The other positions were cut or there was a shift in staff.
