I received a MN teacher's license in Dec/1999. I moved to Texas shortly after and began teaching in Texas in 2001. I took the necessary test (TeXES -similar to the Praxis) and did all my continuing education hours to fulfill the Texas state requirements. I even took a level 2 Praxis- type test in a specific subject area. I'm currently wanting to move back to MN and have applied at schools. My MN license, of course, expired in 2006. What will I have to do to get my MN license current. Will my test and hours in Texas be able to transfer???? Will I be given a provisional time period? Will I be able to teach in MN?
I am not sure what the answer is, but Minnesota natives moving to teach in southern states then looking to return north is a fairly common occurrance.
With that in mind, someone at the Minnesota Department of Education Headquarters, along Highway 36 in Roseville, should have the answers. When you call I would ask for names and extentions of anyone giving you information.
Whether or not your Texas Certification is still current will determine what you will need to do for a new Minnesota License? I would send to the Minnesota Department of Education any written documentation like a copy of your current Texas Teaching License, score reports of the PRAXIS Exams you have passed and transcripts all all colleges and universities you have earned credit from so the Dept. of Education can evaluate your info and tell you what tests you need to take or university cousework needs to be completed. Maybe you'll receive an eqivelent current Minnesota license. A lot depends on your subject area licensure.
I do need to warn you though, Laura, the prospects of finding a teaching position in Minnesota is considerably more difficult now than it was back in 1999 and in 2001. Layoffs and hiring freezes are the norm across all subject area's now.
Back in 1999 and 2001 the Minnesota economy and the Twin Cities specifically were doing very well, among the strongest nationally. Presently, however we are past discussing whether this is a recession; talk now is contemplating depression. Many of the well paying jobs have left. We are like Michigan and Ohio now.
Good Luck in your move back to Minnesota, Luara! Hopfully another reader who has moved back to Minnesota and currently teaching here can post info on their experiences becomming recertified in Minnesota from another state, so keep checking back on this message board.
Minnesota Teacher.

Hi -- I began substitute teaching in MN this year. I have a 4 year degree in Communication. I've enjoyed subbing for the most part, but don't see doing it for the long term. I'm trying to decide if I should pursue a Masters in Education as possibly a reading specialist. I'm 41 yrs. old, have some debt already, married with 2 kids gr. 5 and gr. 3. I want to be home in the summers as my kids get older, I don't want them on their own all the time, and I will need to work. I don't know if it is worth the money and stress to return to school. From these posts, it looks like jobs are hard to come by in MN. If I specialize in ESL or Reading, would that make it easier? harder?
As part of a graduate research project, I need to gather data from current teachers. I’m researching the use of technology in the classroom and what factors affect it. If you could just take a few minutes to complete my survey, I’d appreciate it. The survey is online and has 15 questions.
