Hello, all. We're thinking about moving to Columbia in 2008 and would like some advice about schools. I am a gifted teacher, so I am interested in information about the gifted program for Columbia Public Schools. I'm wondering if there are many teaching positions for teachers who are experienced (and higher on the payscale). I also have special needs (autistic) children, so I am interested in finding out anything about special ed in this school system and good schools for that. Many thanks.

I have not yet started working in the district. I'm a career changer working on my certification. The link below will take you to the Columbia Public Schools Gifted Program website. I believe they were hiring someone this year for gifted, so maybe they will be next year as well. The gifted programs are different depending on the child's grade level.
I have several teachers in class that work with special needs students. Columbia seems to have some decent programs. Maybe the test scores posted on their web site will help you select a school.
If you are planning on leaving Missouri to come to Nevada, check out Teachers4Change...... You need to get the facts regarding the Silver State before you come here......
I am considering a career change and already have an MBA. I want to be elem ed certified, do you think it would be wise to get an M.Ed or is the MBA enough? In addition to certification, I will also be getting a TESOL endorsement.
I would get certified in secondary and teach business. Then once you are in a district, take classes toward a M.Ed. Many districts reimburse 50% of tuition and it will count toward the credits you need for professional development.

I agree with Melanie. I wish I had done that! I could have been teaching now! Instead I have another year before getting certified. Teach Business until you get your elementary certification.

Hello, I am trying to find a teacher from Missouri for a postcard exchange. All teachers send and receieve one postcard from each of the 50 states. Our group only has 6 states left and all 50 will be represented.
Please join us if you would like to take part in this great project for your classroom.

I currently have a BS in Biology and for the past 10 years have been a scientist. I want to go into teaching but have no been able to find the information to do this. Do I need to go back and get an Education degree or ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
You'll have to take some more classes, but you shouldn't have to get an education degree. If you are planning on teaching Middle School or HS science you can apply for jobs now. If the district needs science teachers they will help you obtain a temporary certification.
check out dese for the info.

Toby, I see that you have had a lot of advise already, but I think that I can help you. My name is Damien Widick, I work at the University of Phoenix in the Online Education Department. I serve as the Teacher Education Liaison to Missouri from UOP. I work specifically with Missouri teachers on a temporary certificate. I am sure that you have already viewed DESE's website concerning the temp cert, but please call me and I can help you. The temp cert will allow you to start teaching for a district and you will have to complete 9 credit hours annually and pass the praxis to obtain a fulltime cert. I have several courses offered online in 3-6 week formats that will meet the requirements for the 9 credit hours. If you would like me to email you a list of the courses, please email me at damien.[email removed].

Hi, I'm entering my 9th year as a high school special ed teacher. I have a professional clear education specialist credentia, mild to moderate. My current class has students with learning and emotional behavioral disabilities. My wife has a preliminary level 1 credential, and is currently an administrator at a school for students with emotional behavioral disabilities. We are interested in current salaries in the St. Louis area, and also how our credential would transfer in obtaining a Missouri credential. We greatly appreciate any info anyone can offer. Nick Banche
Here is a link to salary schedules for Missouri. [link removed]
I think you would have to contact DESE to see what how a CA license transfers.
