Hey Everyone, I am looking for a teacher (any grade) from Missouri to join in on the upcoming 2008-2009 post card exchange! If you are interested in joining or would like more information please email me at [email removed]
Be aware that your social security benefit at retirement will SUBTRACT your teaching pension from the amount you would have gotten. The great American rip off to teachers!
curiousIs that just in MO? My Ks retirement isn't influenced by my social security benefits?

I'm on the east side of the state and we are considering visiting some friends near the KC airport. We are always looking for fun stuff to do and were wondering if there are things to do near Bauman Park (as I see it on the map). My children are 9 & 11. Any suggestions? thanks, mathteacherSara
We live near KC and I've never heard of Bauman Park....where is it?

DANG!!! I am on the wrong side of the river! Subs on the Illinois side from the St. Louis area do well to get 80 a day in the high paying districts!
GenaI am not sure about the phasing out part, but I did hear they might be developing essential learning outcomes for each grade level meaning there would be fewer in number. I wouldn't be surprised if there is some of kind of change or update in the near future. Time will tell:)
I'm a high school math teacher in MO who has a great deal of respect and admiration for math teachers at every level of a child's development!
Following is an attempt to share information regarding the state of mathematics education in our state: (hopefully the links will work and you won't have to cut and paste!)
This is what's happening in Columbia Missouri: [link removed]
Here's what college math professors in our state have been working on: [link removed]
Scroll all the way down to read recent comments on Missouri's Grades 6-8 Math August 08 draft by R. James Milgram
"Since I had already pointed out these issues in my original invited review of these standards, I can only assume that the authors are consciously determined to deprive Missouri students of the opportunity to learn this more and more vital part of elementary mathematics well enough to be able to realistically major in technical areas at the university level."
I believe that we've got to take action in order to improve mathematics education in our state!!

DESE needs to involve mathematicians at every level, including college professors, and write standards containing:
Focus, Rigor, and Coherence (by William H. Schmidt) [link removed]
There are two videos from the Leading Minds K-12 Math Education Forum, April 2008 by William Schmidt and James Milgram that EVERY math teacher (at EVERY level) MUST SEE! ([link removed])
I wasn't aware of this. I thought that it was banned everywhere now, as it should be!
Concerned
