I have to be honest about my situation. My husband is not in the best of health and I have a child that takes up a lot of time and energy (special needs) and I am not sure what his needs will be as he gets closer to adulthood. He will eventually be able to live independently, but he will need help.
Both occupations are demanding careers, but I truely can't see myself doing anything else. I want to do something that will help others. I do have a heart for children with disabilities and their families because as a parent of one, I have probably felt every emotion they have felt at one time or the other. And, I have seen my child struggle in every area of his life, especially school. I have had to figure out how to help him with assignments in rather unconventional ways, but it worked and he eventually learned the material.
I do have to add that I am not a genius. I earn every A I get. Math is my hardest subject, while English/Writing comes natural for me and I do enjoy History (although, that may be in part to my wonderful History professor).
Should I even give teaching a second thought? I am really at a point where I need to make a decision before I drive myself crazy over this.

I have been teaching for 18 years and have not regretted a minute of it. I have two children with special needs. Yes, it is hard to break in right now...no question. But getting certified in some areas that are hard to find certified applicants for would help. Check DESE's web site and see what the areas of critical need are. Plan on getting a Masters degree (there are lots of online programs). There are two reasons for this...it will help you enter higher up on the pay scale and you can use it to get additional certifications that will help you. Some fields that seem to be always needing teachers are Special Education, ESOL, Reading, and several secondary special areas such as Math and Science. You have to do what is best for your family. Teaching has it's ups and downs. There is plenty of paperwork, especially in general education. There is politics. How well the staff relates to one another (the culture and climate) depends on how positive the principal is. I have worked for some that have made my life hell and others that were inspirational. But I wouldn't go back in time and do anything differently. Each experience was a learning opportunity for me. Always remember that it's about the kids. If it stops being about the kids, than it is time to do something else with your life. Good luck to you
I am looking to move to Missouri primarily to the St. Charles area. And I was wondering if there is a need for substitute teachers? I currently live in a suburb of Chicago, and it is very competitive even to got onto a sub list. Any advice on the process of becoming and looking for a sub job in the suburbs of St. Louis would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

From commercially available teaching guides in math, science, and communication arts, to VHS tapes, cassette tapes of children's music, to magazines from the Mailbox Center, I have much to share for the teacher willing to to do a little digging to fill out some files and subjects.
I have a marble maze for play or physics lessons, Box It and Bag It math for first/second grade or kindergarten centers, Success in Reading for communication arts supplementing, and I'm sure a pile of stuff I have not even excavated yet.
Please contact before June 21, 2010 through the above email. Must be able to pick up in person, NO shipping will be done.

I was asked at an interview if you were doing one of your hobbies, and the principal came in and asked you to get the students ready for testing, what would you do?
I've gotten this question a few times. My answer has always been: I would explain to the principal that the students were truly learning the state standards that way and show him evidence of this. However, if he still wanted me to stop, I'd respect his authority. I'd explain the shift in the classwork to students as my idea and necessary ("Cooking was fun but now it's time to more directly review our fractions"). But I don't know if that's the "right" answer--I did have a hard time getting a job.

Has anyone received their (probably last!) Career ladder check yet? When does your school normally issue them? We've received ours as late as August before. None here yet.
