Math Investigations

Ok, I am wondering if anyone else out there has been
struggling with Math Investigations? I have been teaching
for nine years now and for the most part, my kids have
done a very nice job on their MAP test scores. I don't
know about the other grades, but the fifth grade program
is a mess. If I follow the scope and sequence, then my
kids will not even be close to being prepared for "the
test." They can explain what multiplication means, but if
you ask a lot of them a simple multiplication problem,
they have trouble answering. I hate to be behind some of
these kids at a bank when they have to pull out a bunch of
manipulatives to see what they need to deposit. I have no
problem with problem solving, but if the kids do not have
a foundation of the basic facts, it is REALLY, REALLY hard
for them to go to the higher level of thinking. I spent
