I am in my 3rd year of special ed teaching at a psychiatric residential treatment facility that contracts with the local district for teachers and assistants. I have been under so much stress in this position that I don't think my health can take it any longer. Nightmares, headaches, soaring blood pressure, anxiety attacks etc. I would like for them to release me from my contract but don't want to risk suspension of my license. I see and hear thing daily that would give anyone nightmares. I work with very mentally ill students that are violent and dangerous and I have 1st through 11th in my classroom. Some have IEP's and some do not. It is a hugh spread. I can't stay. Please give my any advice on leaving this position. Should I speak to my union rep. or what? I am what is called "cooked" in residential talk.

I broke my first teaching contract due to similar circumstances. It was very, very, hard for me to find another job. It still haunts me at interviews. I have found one district that would hire me and now I seem to be stuck there. Please talk to your rep before you do anything you might regret.
Speak to your union representative and tell him that the job is making you ill. Perhaps you can take a leave from this position.

Back on November 6th, Ms. Barbara Wills very kindly posted information regarding the CARGILL GLOBAL EXCHANGE FUND SCHOLARSHIP for students interested in studying abroad.
The nomination/application deadline for this exciting scholarship opportunity has been extended until January 8th.
If your students live within a 50 mile radius of the Cargill communities BYHALIA or CRAWFORD, they may qualify...

Did you "Google" it? I found PDF in columns as well as many ohter sources when I typed "The Scarlet Ibis" in the Google search bar.
I am still interested in hearing from teachers of u s history. What do you do, instead of lecturing, to get the basic information over to your students? My school is using the 4x4 block.
Where can I find a website or whatever that can tell me how much teachers make in Mississippi according to their county or their city? I am about to graduate from College with an Elementary Edu degree and am wondering where the best place to teach in Mississippi is. I hope you can help me!
I'll add in that the coast has some nice equipment and other pluses after Hurricane Katrina. I met with one lady--I can't remember her district now, but it was coastal...maybe long beach?--and she said that they have a clinic down there that teachers can go to and bring their families to for free to low- cost medical care.

There are 3 districts on the Coast with that benefit. Harrison County, Pass Christian, and Biloxi. The clinic is great and has saved me hundreds of dollars since they have opened it. It is a fantastic benefit.

Found a fantastic new chapter-book series for ages 7-9 that the kids in my class are thrilled about. It's called the Incredible Journey Books and it has fast-paced worldly adventures filled with geography facts. The plots are interesting and the series has done the trick to get my third-grade class interested in exploring the world map. The books have a great site that has an Africa unit along with puzzles to go with each book. Go to [link removed].

I have been thinking about getting a Special Education addition to my K-8 certification. Do I really just have to take and pass a test? I have been teaching inclusion for 4 years, and I would like to have Special Education as an option for the future.

I don't know. I assumed that you have to have some coursework in SPED. Contact the state department, and they could tell you more. Let us know. I am interested in that as well.

I took the Praxis (353, I think) in September 03 and that added Sped Certification Mild and Moderately Disabled to my elementary certification

You might want to check out the rock and roll hall of fame. They have a section for educators with lots of lessons on music, etc. You may be able to find some inspiration that.

Try Lyrics.Com You will have to read the song lyrics. I have found that you can select a group of students to discuss and analyze appropriate songs. Be careful and look for hidden messages, the students usually know and will tell you.
Is it just me, or are students getting spring fever earlier this year? I teach first grade, and the quality of work since Christmas break has been awful. I've told my administrators, but nothing is being done to help. I've also heard the same thing from other teachers at my school. Is anyone else having ths problem?

I haven't really noticed it. In fact, my students have been a little more focused, but that may be b/c of the type of class I teach. I teach GT and have taken the place of another teacher who was there for a long time. So, now I feel more like these are my students....and they seem to feel more like I am their teacher.
