Please, send on to your teachers. AFS volunteers are ready to give presentations in the new year, just give us a call and one will be quickly arranged. Now is the time for students to start applying for the summer and next school year programs. This is especialy true if one needs scholarship assistance and also many programs fill quickly just after the new year begins.

Hello everyone. I have heard that Desoto County schools are looking for tutors. Does anyone know whether this is true and, if so, where I would find informatioh?
Help! What am I supposed to teach juniors and seniors now at this point. I have ran through the framework and now I am staring at a blank wall.I need some shout outs from veteran secondary English teachers!
this was probably a frustrated new teacher who was just looking for some help...
why don't you go jump in a lake?

While that probably seems low to you (I've lived in other states with higher costs of living), you shouldn't have a problem finding affordable housing AT ALL. I live in a small 3-bedroom, 1 1/2 bath and my payment is around $700. If I chose to live in another area of town, I could have gotten an even better deal, but I wanted this area for the schools.
My mom is from CA originally (Selma/Fresno area) and I've visited there quite a bit. If you aren't really familiar with Mississippi's culture, I would definitely recommend the gulf coast area. It has a more diverse population base with the air force base and the casinos, so it can be a smoother transition. North Mississippi has its positives to recommend it as well, but in my opinion, it tends to be much less diverse.
Good luck to you for whatever decision you choose!

Pay is extremely low compared to other states. I have worked in the MS Delta for 14 years with a Master's and was only making 42,000. You will earn every cent of it. Schools are very rough. Stay away from Greenville, Indianola, Moorehead, or Holmes County. Most new teachers don't last the year there. If you are considering High School,be prepared for intercity behaviors even though these are rulal areas. Pay is generally the same across the state. Contact Roy Curry at Leflore County Schools in Greenwood Ms. Not a bad District, but does have the school violence expected in most Delta schools. It is the better district in the area. Housing is cheap.
Earthwatch Fellow...See MoreEarthwatch has extended the application deadline for our Mississippi Teacher Fellowships! All teachers and administrators in Mississippi are eligible to apply.
We are now accepting applications on a rolling basis until March 30th 2009. The sooner you or a teacher you know is able to apply the better the chances!
