AFS Project: Change launches the 2nd annual scholarship contest Project: Change Last Fall, we launched an online competition asking 8-12th graders across the country, “ what change would you make in the world?” The challenge was simple: in a short essay or video, address one of five major global issues, choose an AFS country in which you would ...See MoreAFS Project: Change launches the 2nd annual scholarship contest Project: Change Last Fall, we launched an online competition asking 8-12th graders across the country, “ what change would you make in the world?” The challenge was simple: in a short essay or video, address one of five major global issues, choose an AFS country in which you would like to make a change, and enter to win.
We were overwhelmed with the number of original volunteer project ideas we received. A winner was chosen - Sam Harshbarger of Cranbury, NJ - and he and four other students received full scholarships to bring his vision into action on a customized, two-week program to document indigenous Russian populations. Watch an interview with one of the participants.
As a result of last year’s success, Project: Change is back, and bigger than ever. You will see that it is featured prominently throughout the Scholastic materials. We also encourage you to spread the word to inspired teenagers in your community. They’ll have the chance to learn about real issues affecting our world today, and expand their thinking to come up with ways in which they could be part of the solution. See what Project: Change is all about.
Last year Catlyn Ellis ( who is now a freshman at UTK) and was a senior at Rossview HS from Clarksville, TN, was one Mthe four national winners who won a trip to Russia to explore her project.

1) Two Week AFS Global Prep Programs for this Summer and More- Places Still Available
What: Study Abroad on an AFS Global Prep Program for two weeks this summer. There are numerous destinations in Europe and South America. There are three (3) different types: science technology and math, culture and languages and community service. Thirteen (13) year olds may go on these programs.

2) Bring the World to Your Area- Host an AFS-USA Exchange Student this Fall
What: Become a host family for one or two of the AFS-USA Exchange Students who will be needing a host school and family this fall. There is now a large selection. Therefore, choosing early can ensure that you will be able to host.
Where: In your home and local high school . Home schooled families may host, but the AFSers must attend private or public local high schools.

AFS, a worldwide, nonprofit organization, has been leading international high school student exchange for more than 6 5 years.This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the original American Field Service Volunteer Ambulance Drivers who served in WWI and WWII.
