I am in my 3rd year of special ed teaching at a
psychiatric residential treatment facility that contracts
with the local district for teachers and assistants. I
have been under so much stress in this position that I
don't think my health can take it any longer. Nightmares,
headaches, soaring blood pressure, anxiety attacks etc. I
would like for them to release me from my contract but
don't want to risk suspension of my license. I see and
hear thing daily that would give anyone nightmares. I
work with very mentally ill students that are violent and
dangerous and I have 1st through 11th in my classroom.
Some have IEP's and some do not. It is a hugh spread. I
can't stay. Please give my any advice on leaving this
position. Should I speak to my union rep. or what? I am
what is called "cooked" in residential talk.

Speak to your union representative and tell him that
the job is making you ill. Perhaps you can take a
leave from this position.
