We are Australia's first and only online directory where teachers wishing to organise a teaching exchange or holiday swap can register their details. Each exchange or holiday swap is displayed as a mini "web page" complete with photo albums and relevant information. You can spend hours reading the different profiles, viewing photos and visiting links to teacher exchange and holiday swap locations all over the world. Check us out on the link below!
Hi! I only need 11 classrooms to complete my postcard exchange. I need a representative from IA, NH, NE, SD, AZ, HI, SC, NM, VT, MT & WY. Most of the participants are kindergartens. If you would like to join the exchange or would like more information, please email me. I will need your name, grade taught, school name and address, email address (home and school) and school phone number. Please help me out if you can!
We are a new postcard exchange, and we need a kinder, first, or second grade class from Montana to participate. You will need to purchase 50-55 postcards to mail to all of the other states (and maybe a few to Canada). I am compiling all of the information, and will send all of the addresses out as soon as all of the "spots" are filled. In return, you will receive a postcard from every state, all throughout the year. This is a very exciting project! Please join us!
Dear Tracie: I need more information about the postcard exchange. Your post is the first time I've read about it. It sounds like fun. Send me more information. Thank you! JJ

Teachers, If you are looking for an internet project to get involved in this year, please check this out. It will begin the first week of October and run through February. It will tie Social Studies and Science curriculum together through comparing community and weather data. I have done this project in the past, students enjoy it and they learn a great deal. Use the link to see the details, if you are interested please leave your information at the site on the 'i note! If you see that someone from your state has joined, that is okay. We can have multiple participants from the same state. If you have any further questions email me. Thanks, Terry Stoufer Project Coordinator

Billings just had a big turnover in teachers' and also they had a strike. I think your best bet is to start networking after Christmas. Attend some career fairs, etc. We had an opening for a librarian in Whitefish-don't know if the person filled the spot, or what. Good luck.

I am hearing only bad things about teaching in Montana, yet my husband and I are planning on moving there next summer. (June 2004) I am getting scared. What is the reason for treating their teachers so poorly? What in the world is going on? Are any areas better for pay and benefits than others? Please help and give some insight...Thanks.
Beth, the reason for low teacher salaries in the Big Sky Country is because each school board in communities across the state decide what they will pay their teachers and freeze the salaries for 2 - 5 years. We do not have a state wide teacher salary. If the farmers, in most of the communities, have a bad year the school levy doesn't pass, therefore no raise for the certified staff. However, in my district they gave the classified staff and the administration raises every year but not their teachers. We don't have a sales tax in the state, however, our coal tax and lottery was suppose to give us a break but that's not happening. Our state Office of Public Instruction President a few years ago took money from the small districts given to the districts by the natural gas companies and spread it across our state for all schools. This took money away from the little schools that were already suffering. Our cost of living is lower than most states so our low salaries are compensated in that respect. You really need two salaries in the household to make ends meet with the low salaries. I'm single and have a tought time of it and I've taught for 30 years. If you move from district to district you are only allowed to bring in 3 to 5 years of experience. However, living in most little towns you have to travel a 100 miles to see doctors, dentists, shopping, etc. We're a big state with a small population. If you work in a Native American school you receive a good salary. The schools across America are suffering the same budget cuts as we do here in Montana. In most rural areas the students are really good, however, the larger towns do have their problems! Winters are tough and sometimes dangerous along the Canadian border but the southern part of the state has a milder winter climate. The west side of the state has the Rocky Mountains. The average base salary is $19,000-$21,000. You have to live on "teacher steaks", hotdogs! It's worth it for the peace and solitude!
