I was curious about any fourth grade teachers out there who just viewed their students Statewide Writing Assessment scores - any inconsistencies in scoring? Too low? Too high? What are your thoughts about your students' results?
I'm sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner. I don't come to this board very often and just now saw your response.
We had a higher percentage of student fail the assessment this year compared to last year. We do have a higher percentage of special education students this year compared to last year, but we also kept copies of all the written work submitted by the students and we were very surprised at some of the scores received by our higher ability students. I have a teacher in my school who was a rater for the last two years and has significant training in 6 traits writing. She felt that the raters were much better trained this year than last year. That may explain the tougher scoring. I have spoken to several administrators who said that their scores were much lower this year. I do know that it doesn't really do any good to compare students to other students - the scores are derived from a rubric; not comparison or rating in any specific order.
I hope that helps.

State web site show the 4th grade pass rate for the state in 2007-08 as 90.58% and last year 2008-09 as 90.3%. It would seem if the above statements by teachers were true the total pass rate for the state would have dropped but did not.
Class collecting postcards from every state before the end of school, May 24. Need one from Nebraska. Could you please help? Mrs. Brimer's Class, Stemmons Elementary, 2727 Knoxville Rd., Dallas, Texas 75211. Thanks, from the kids.
I am a contacting you from England and I wonder if you could help me.
Could you please tell me, do teachers write summer end of year reports to parents in your country.
If so, what format are these in and do they reflect the entire years subjects taught or are they a more general summary of a child’s year and achievements.

I teach three sections of Classroom Structure/Behavior Management at a small college and I am looking for early childhood (primary) classroom teachers who are willing to participate in an "e" project in the fall semester, becoming an e-pal with one of my pre-service teachers, discussing classroom management strategies/philosophies/approaches that work/have not worked in your classroom. This would involve between 4-6 e- mail responses to my students about classroom management. At the end of the project, I would also like to know if this experience has been useful to you (reflective, metacognitive??). Want to be an e-pal for a semester??
Do you teach 4th grade? I was a first year teacher this year, and I also had to teach NE history with no guidelines to follow. I was dreading it, especially since I'm not from Nebraska! My school had purchased the Journey Through Nebraska textbooks for the students to use, but they are way above 4th grade level. I went to a teacher supply store and got a NE history activity book and a theme book on state history and did some things from there. I also used the Nebraska trailblazers extensively. I found a website that has activities and printables from those newspapers. I'm home for the summer, but could possibly get you some of the info I used if you need it yet this year. Just let me know.
