We are a different postcard exchange than the one posted below. We are a Kindergarten/first grade postcard exchange. We also need New Mexico! First one to email me gets it! :) [email removed]
Hello, I have opened up a few states on my second year exchange. Due to the fact that I am starting back school soon, I am looking for serious teachers ready to participate 100%. I am limited on my time for preparing the documents you will need. If you are truly interested in an exchange please let me know. I will need your school information and you may email me that directly at [email removed]!
What about subbing? Do I need to upgrade my CA credential for a NM one? Meaning do I have to take the Praxis? (God I hope not!) All I want to do is sub. What does that situation look like ..in either Albuquerque or Valencia County Los Lunas, Peralta or Bosque Farms?
To sub, just show up. (You need 2 years of college, a TB test, background check...but basically just show up). You'll have no problem getting subbing jobs here as it pays poverty wages with no benefits. The plus is it's run by a computer system so you can say "no" to whatever jobs you feel like or take a day off whenever you feel like and no one keeps track. You can also pick-and-choose the schools, ages, subjects or areas of town where you want to sub.
To teach in a not-subbing position.... I originally had Iowa licensure and then moved here. If you did a regular teacher ed program (student teaching, etc.) you should be fine for a 1 year license. Within that year...sorry to say....you have to take 2-4 expensive tests. They aren't the Praxis. They're EASY, but you have to take them.
I've been hearing that teachers will get a 5% pay raise...anybody know if this is true? Any info on the 2006- 07 pay schedule for APS? Is this across the board or for just level II and III?
The Albuquerque Teachers Federation is the name of the union, and during the day their offices are always manned. You'll have to google NM ATF to get the phone, but they may first ask if you are a member. Their website, however, should answer your question. NM legislature gave the district the money and green light to give an AVERAGE 5% pay raise, so some may get more, others less. The reason for that is most district pay schedules flattened out at the upper levels of experience as the state beefed up the bottom of the pay schedule. This was a real big issue in ABQ. Some districts, like Good Golly Gallup, gave the 5% across the board, except the supe who got 9.5% because that's what the state gave the educational assistants. Go figure. Bluetail Fly

I am interested in teaching in Portales (eastern part of New Mexico) and was wondering if anyone here has taught in the school system. I would be teaching in the elementary level.

I taught in Portales in 2001-2002 and really enjoyed it. Most of the schools are very tight-nit and welcoming to their subs. Even the high school was great, the kids were very respectful with the teachers were more than willing to go out of their way for you, especially if you have real subject knowledge. Just becareful with the elementary assignments at Brown because you can find yourself doing a lot of special educational needs work that doesn't involve teaching at all. I don't exactly remember the pay scale, I think that it was $50 or $75 a day?
I am looking for teachers who are dedicated and will participate fully in this project. Last year we had had a wonderful response rate and I would like to see that continue.
Each teacher will be responsible for sending a postcard to each of the other states. Please include information about your state such as state symbols and interesting facts. Our third grade curriculum includes learning about our town so we will include that information as well. In return, you will receive a postcard back from each of the states involved. Address labels will be provided to you if you wish. Also, a list of names, addresses, and school websites will be e-mailed to you. My goal is to mail address labels by mid to end of September. The mailing deadline for the postcards is October 27th.
If you are interested in participating in this exchange, please send the following information to my email address: kimberleyg2003yahoo.com.
Name
Grade you teach
E-mail address
Name you would like on mailing label (Ms. G's Third Grade Class)
Hi! I am trying to find out if anyone in New Mexico is using my music yet, just out of curiousity. I know of 34 out of 50 states that have at least one person that uses HeidiSongs- but not New Mexico. Is there anyone from New Mexico out there using Sing and Spell or Jumpin' Numbers? Heidi
We're currently stationed at Eglin AFB. My husband and I will be moving to the Las Cruces/Alamagordo next summer when he retires from the AF. I've taught (Civil Service) in Air Force tech schools and faculty development for almost ten years, but have no formal teaching certification. I've also subbed (K-12) in Texas and Montana.
My goal is to work part time as a substitute once we move...could someone advise me as to the pay, certification requirements, and general atmosphere for subs?
Thanks! Jan
P.S. I've enjoyed reading the threads on this board--very helpful.
I sub in Lovingto, with my BS degree. I get $75 a day. I have been other places and they get a lot whole lot more. With out my degree, I would only get $45 without any school hours, $55 with an AA In Hobbs a sub with a degree gets $55, non degree gets $50. What's up with that? Texas is a better paying job for Subs and for teachers...Try there!
