Hi! I just moved here from CO, and was looking to get more info on substitute teaching. I understand that I must have the superintendent sign off on my application? How is this generally handled? Also, does anyone know the pay rates for substitutes in the ABQ area? Thanks for the help!
Hello, I am currently a Literature teacher at an Albuquerque middle school. I also tutor part-time through YDI (this will be ending soon), but because my husband will be making a job change so that he can go to college...we will have a significant income loss. I am looking for any opportunity to earn more money to make up the difference. I applied for a summer school position and will be going back to school this summer and, hopefully, can apply for a student loan. If anyone has any information that may be helpful...I would greatly appreciate it.
My name is Becky Mallatt and I am from Oregon. I am organzing a 50 state quilt block exchange and I have all but 10 of the states ready to go. New Mexico is one that I don't have yet. I know this is a long shot, but I came upon your this chatboard, so I thought maybe I could send you the info and maybe one of the K-2 teachers here would like to participate. It will be totally free for you to join us, because the grant pays for everything. Here is the info I have posted on several websites. If you would like to join or know someone else from NM who would, PLEASE reply ASAP. thanks so much and have a great day!
I received a "Kids in Need" grant for a "50 State Quilt Square Exchange." Here's how the project will work: I will get one teacher from each of the 50 states to agree to make 50 identical PAPER quilt squares to represent their state. They should be 6" square, done TLC-style (cut/glued paper). For instance, we made a beaver on ours because Oregon is "The Beaver State." Washington could be a pine tree design it's "The Evergreen State" and Florida could be a big sun because it's "The Sunshine State." You will also need to have a written piece, also 6" square, to go with each square (simple, kid- friendly, short and simple, writing pieces). They can all be the same. I am planning to do an interactive piece with my whole class.
My grant will pay for you to mail me your completed squares and writing. I will then redistribute your 50 squares into files for each state, so that after I have gotten everything, I will have a file for each state with all 50 states' quilt squares and writing pieces. I will then send that file back to you. THEN you can either make them into a 50-states quilt piece that you can display in your school, OR maybe make it into a book - this part is up to you.
If you are interested, please email me ASAP to my school email, rmallattbend.k12.or.us, or home email, [email removed]:
Your name & State Grade School School address Email
I will confirm with you and will then send you detailed instructions. Please respond ASAP as we need to get this project going as quickly as we can.
Hi I live in Chicago, and once i am done with my B.S. (Biology) I hope to teach High School Biology. I am having a real difficult time finding either job fairs or any websites that offer any job openings in or around the Albuquerque area. I hope to move to Albuquerque in a year or year and a half, so any info would be great so I can prepare for whatever I need to do to be certified in New Mexico as well as Illinois also to teach Sec.Ed. Thanks alot, Jim! p.s. please email me at [email removed]!
Openings won't be posted for Albquerque Public Schools this early. Perhaps they will in April, or May. There is also a job fair at the end of May (that one must pre-register for through APS) but it's one of those "500 teachers show up, there are 35 openings" kind of scenes.
Also look into the charter school system, but research the schools as much as you can so you know what you're getting into. Some are well run and financially solvent and some are not.
In the meantime, worry about applying for your license and finding out when you can take the state tests.

Hello, I am a teacher on Long Island with 20 years experience and MA+75 credits, teaching special education. I have a husband and two teen age children. We are considering a move to New Mexico (possibly Rio Rancho). Seven years ago, my husband was diagnosed with a serious, rare genetic illness and is disabled. I am the sole supporter of our family and Long Island cost-of-living is making it very difficult to make ends meet, even though teacher salaries here are truly decent. My question is, can a family of four survive on one teacher's salary in Rio Rancho. If we sell our home here, it might be possible for us to buy a little house there with little to no mortgage. If I am paid somewhere between $40,000 to $50,000 thousand a year, would the cost-of-living in NM make it affordable for me to support my family?
I am a teacher in Chicago with 13yrs. of experience and a masters degree. I am currently making close 10 60,000 a year but with the cost of living in Chicago increasing it is getting harder and harder to live here.I only pay about 100 dollars a month for health insurance and I also have disability insurance. I have no dependants but I am trying to relocate because I would like to move my mother out of this crazy city. My father in law just passed and I think Chicago has become too fast for us. How well could I expect to live in New Mexico? I know there will be a decrease in salary but there will be a decrease in expenses also, correct?

Consider Las Cruces nice growing city near El Paso.

So, since I've been on a leave of absence, even though APS has to offer me a job, I have to go and express my interest to various principals to increase my changes of ending up at a school where I'll like teaching. If anyone reading this has worked at any elementary or middle schools or can tell me anything about the strengths/weaknesses let me know. I'll be applying for upper elementary general and ESL, and maybe middle school English and ESL.
You can e-mail me privately at coartist at yahoo dot com also.
Hi! I am starting my dossier for level II, I am having a hard time getting started. Is there a website besides NMTEACH that could help me. Does anyone know where I can look at samples of elem. and what advise do you have for getting this thing done?
Go to RETA on the web and sign up for workshops starting next Saturday at UNM. So far there are 31 people enrolled. Good luck! sandi

I am hoping to relocating to Albuquerque from Illinois, but I'd like the scoop before I make concrete plans. Does anyone know in which Tier I would likely be placed with a standard Illinois 9-12 certificate with an ESL endorsement and five years experience.? Additionally, are there many jobs available for high school Spanish teachers or ESL teachers? Thanks so much.
There are high school Spanish and ESL jobs but you might also need to look into the charter school system.

I am thinking about relocating to New Mexico from Miami within a year. I have 10 years teaching experience, my National Board Certification, Elementary Ed, ESOL Certified (K-12), Reading Certified (K-12),and I have my Master's degree in Reading. Does anyone know what tier I will fall in to with my experience? What are my chances of becoming a reading coach at the Elementary level?
The reading coach jobs are often filled with people the principal and teachers already know so you shouldn't count on necessarily getting one of those right away. However, you do seem very qualified.

Hi! I'm a teacher relocating from the NYC public schools to Albuquerque. I was wondering if anyone has any advice for how to go about searching for jobs. I wouldn't be moving until August. I have been teaching for 4 years now, and I am certified in New York State. I have been teaching in GT classes, dual language classes, and Special Ed. I'm working on putting my portfolio together. Any advice? Also, any ideas on how much I would be making? I don't really understand the tier system.
Apply as soon as possible to the State Department of Education to get your license. Then do the Albuquerque Public Schools paperwork to have everything needed on file. They will probably lose your paperwork so keep checking up on them. Also, research the charter schools to find out which ones you are willing to apply to (they are not considered part of APS).
You probably will be able to find a special ed job.
Research the reading programs-- especially "balanced literacy".
If you can get a level 2 license you'd make at least $40,000. You might make more due to education and if you have the ESL endorsement ($500 more automatically and $2500 more if you teach and ESL class or a student who requires ESL services). This isn't a bad income for Albuquerque though house prices have been going up. If they only give you a level 1 license you should be able to get level 2 within a year if you work on your "dossier" the first year that you teach.
