I am trying to figure out what test I can take to add the TESOL endorsement to my license, (as described on the PED website), but I can find no info on it anywhere. The NMTA website says nothing about it. Where is said exam??? Thanks, Jesse
There is no test currently, but I think one will be added soon. Right now in order to add a TESOL endorsement to your license, you have to take the necessary classes.
There is no exam (I know they have one in some states, like TExas, but not here). Go to the State Department of NM website, print an application for adding endorsements to your license, send it in with your transcripts. They will either add the endorsement to your license and send you a new license, or they will write you a letter telling you what courses you need to take. UNM and College of Santa FE offer the courses you would need, if you need any. Do NOT go to UNM and ask them what to take, as they will recommend twice as many classes as you actually need!
I thought some of you might be interested in my novel entitled "Soul of the South" which is being tentatively released for the winter of 2005. It is filled with action, romance, and intrigue, as my protagonist serves the South as a spy in Washington, as a diplomat in England and France, and as an officer in the Army of Northern Virginia. My protagonist is also adamantly against slavery, as he makes known to President Lincoln and Confederate President Davis. You are more than welcome to read a chapter excerpt and purchase the novel on my web site at [link removed].
Mrs. Steen was a 5th grade teacher at Sombra del Monte Elementary in Albuquerque, during the 60's. I was wondering if anyone remembers her, and has information. I was one of her students, and wish I'd thought to look for her 1 or 20 years ago. It might be too late now, but I was hoping someone knew. No one at Sombra remembers her.
Hi, I kind of vanished from here for a while. I'm still a union vp though and so I remain in touch with APS issues, etc. As you know we are currently in impasse here in Albuquerque in an attempt to get our therapist, counselor, nurse, and social worker brothers and sisters on pay parity with us. If you can lend your support in any way please do. The union webpage is [link removed].

"I'M FEELING JUST DUCKY" is a free story/coloring book put out by OSSD (Overcoming The Stigma of Seizure Disorders), of Savannah, GA.
We want to reach as many teachers, students, and communities that we possibly can, as seizure disorders are still one of the most misunderstood ailments in society today.
This book tells the tale of a little duck who has seizures, and how he learns to conquer his fears along the way...thanks to Mother Duck and pals.
Please contact Pam Steadman at [email removed].
It is SO IMPORTANT that ALL children know what to expect during a classmate's seizure. This book reaches out in a very gentle and informative manner.
I am becoming frustrated with the public school system. I have sent out numerous resumes and called prinipals and still nothing. How does it seem fair to our students if we aren't hiring teachers until 5 days before school starts, or 20 days after for that matter? Does anyone have any advice on how to get in?
What city are you in? This often happens in Albuquerque--it isn't the principal's fault though. In the spring they get a projection of how many students the district expects the school to have and can hire based on that. This is also influenced by who pre-registers in the spring (even though many, many parents don't register until the fall). Also, openings come up as teachers transfer or decide to leave during the summer. So, as parents register right before school starts, teachers get madly hired before the first day of school. Then, even if classes are illegally large, there must be 20 days of school before the official student count and the permission to hire new teachers. Sometimes it takes as much as 6 months LATER for the teachers to start if a classroom /portable and furniture can not be found, as happened last year when the final phase-in of full-day kindergarten used up every available portable in the state of New Mexico.
So, that's the craziness that causes the ridiculous situation in Albuquerque, and possibly in other places in NM. Perhaps there's a better way, but I won't hold my breath that the district will find it!
At this point, use the job opening websites to find actual openings and apply for as many as you can. The Albuquerque aps.edu job website is updated as often as daily, sometimes less often. Try to contact or visit the principals in person, although many are on vacation. If they are hard to reach now, try in July because some start to become available again in July.
You do want to get hired in ABQ by the first day of school becuse then you're basically guaranteed a job for the next year (they don't say that, but it's true). If you're hired even 1 day after the first day of school then you are pink-slipped at the end of the year since you're considered "short term." Once you get a job, push to get the paperwork through before the first day of school.
As for shortages, there may be in middle and high school English and social studies. In elementary school it seems there is neither a shortage nor too many teachers. There is not a shortage of openings in bilingual ed, or middle/high math and science.
Also, look into the charter school system. The charter schools advertise on their own and run the gamet from well-run and creative to poorly-run and disasterous.
Good luck!
PS. Nepotism is one secret-- get a teacher friend to recommend you to their principal. Also, promote yourself the most at the schools in the fastest-growing areas of town (the West side, although the northwest tends to be a bit better than the southwest in terms of dealing with fewer poverty issues).

Thanks for all of the advice. Yes, I am in Albuquerque and it really does seem backwards after moving here not too long ago. I have been looking elsewhere as well, Rio Rancho, Bernalillo, etc... All areas seem to be on the same page right now...it's almost like a stand still. I will just have to try to enjoy my summer and continue my persuit next month! Thanks again!

Chloe, I've gone to the US Dept. of Educ. website and found info that yes you can get part of your loan deferred if you've worked at the title I school for I think 5 or 6 years. Try their website. I teach at a Title I school, but this will only be my 3rd year, so I haven't fullly looked into it. I also heard that Bush is going to up the amount of defferment next year. Good luck! Let me know if you find out anything. Sarah Lauder, Mountainview Elementary, Moriarty, NM

Hello, I noticed that you teach in Moriarty. I am a new teacher who lives in Moriarty and I am wondering if you know of any openings at your school? I did my student teaching at Rt. 66. I do check the vacancies via the Moriarty District site, however, I know teachers often have "inside" information that is often not listed on the site...until later. If you have any information...I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much!
does anyone know of a good online program to help you prepare for the math endorsement for middle level mathematics? has anyone taken it and have advice?
There is no test currently, but I think one will be added
