Hello. I am relocating to Las Cruces at the end of July, and I have been trying to find a teaching position, either regular education elementary or special ed elementary. I have sent in my applications and resumes to a number of districts, but I haven't heard anything yet. I am beginning to become discouraged. Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do or how I should continue to go about finding a position. I am currently in New York City, so I can't drive to the schools and go in person. Any advice would be great.
You also need to try the surrounding area of Las Cruces. Try the Gadsden Independent School District. Try Anthony, Texas. Try Hatch school district, Deming school district, Alamogordo School district. All of these schools/districts are within a short driving distance of Las Cruces. Contact the New Mexico State University Education Department. Ask for Carolyn Detreich, or Stanley Lopez, they may be able to help you.
And finally, check out the schools in El Paso, Texas. There are two to three districts. El Paso is about a 35 to 40 minute drive, depending on which part of town you go to.
Good Luck,
Christine

If you are planning on leaving New Mexico to come to Nevada, check out Teachers4Change...... You need to get the facts regarding the Silver State before you come here......
Spouses to Teachers is a Department of Defense Program available to spouses of Active Duty, Guard, and Reserve for the reimbursement of teacher certification examinations up to $600 from the date of registration forward. Please go to [link removed].
I am starting a post card exchange for the 2007-2008 school year. We will start mailing out postcards September 10th and have them all mailed out by April 1st. I will email you a list of participants by August 27th with the addresses.
I want this to be a learning experience for my students. They will experience writing addresses and they will learn the locations and a few facts about each state. You can send pre-made postcards or make them yourself.
Once I get the list of participants (with their school addresses) I will mail one to everyone on the list. Each class would send a postcard to everyone on the list. So, by the end of the exchange, your class would send a postcard to hopefully every state and receive one from every state too! The real purpose is to have a fun way to study each state.
Please keep in mind that if you decide to drop out of the exchange, you need to let me know so the students are not disappointed. I want this to be an awesome experience for our students so, please sign up for our exchange.
Email me your name, address, email address, and state if you would like to join. You can participate from any grade level. [email removed]
Please join!! Here are the states we still need! Delaware Hawaii Idaho Iowa Kansas Louisiana Maine New Mexico Rhode Island South Dakota Utah Vermont Washington West Virginia Wisconsin
Email me if you would like to join! [email removed]
I currently teach in a terrible district (very rough school). I have been teaching for twelve years and passed the NTE. Is it impossible to find art teaching jobs? It's not easy here in NY. When we relocate, I'm not even sure I want to continue teaching, but would like to keep my options open. Does anyone know how New Mexico schools compare to NYC public schools?? I have done very basic research - I would appreciate any and all feedback! Thank you so very much!

I've heard about charter schools, but don't know a lot about them. I'm not ruling anything out at this point :-) I was also hoping on subbing. That can at least get me in the door. They always need subs in NY, don't know if it's the same in ABQ. Thanks again.
They always need subs, but not necessarily in art classes. You can even pick which schools or areas of town you're willing to sub in, which age levels, etc. But the sub pay is ridiculously low (like $8 an hour to start, with no benefits).

I am trying to relocate myself to New Mexico State next year and would want to know from anyone if I would need to write the PRAXIS test before I can apply for teacher license certificate.

...See MoreKeep in mind that you CAN work while the reciprocity paperwork is being done. I know that for a fact, as I started as a new teacher this week, and my paperwork is only today going to state for my New Mexico license. Was held up waiting for my 14 year service record from Tx to get here, but the district did not hesitate one bit to hire me.

hi to all..i have my MFA in Painting, i will be relocating to new mexico very soon, and wanted to teach basic art classes-high school level....i was told i needed teachers certification...is this true, even if i hold an MFA?? thanks, tony
It is true for the public schools-- new federal law requires it. There are some private schools you could apply to, but NM isn't exactly teeming with those! I'm not sure about the charter schools...

Thank you for the response. I am currently licensed in SpEd in
New York State, and I applied for license reciprocity in NM.
