I'm certified in Penn and will be teaching hs english in Md this year but would like to move to the southwest. Is it hard to get a nm license while teching in another state? Is there some test that I would have to drive a million miles ot take (like in AZ)? what is the job market like? thanks
I did college in Iowa and then moved here. If you did a program at an accredited college and student taught, they'll give you a license here. You do need to take state tests. Often they'll give you a 1-year license during which you have to take and pass the tests in order to renew your license. I was able to do it before starting teaching because I moved back here in January and took them between January and August.
Are you in Albuquerque? I don't know about group plans, but if your family income is pretty low you might call the UNM Hospital and find about "UNM Cares" (I think that's what it's called) which is a program for anyone who is low income. The waits for doctors are long, but it's better than having no coverage. They'll reject you if you have assets though. I also know someone who paid privately for Blue Cross. However, for Blue Cross they'll reject you if you put down previous medical problems.
We hope you join our Postcard Exchange, now in its fourth year. What's great about this exchange is that the teachers are all positive and involved in this project, so the odds are quite high that you will receive over 50 postcards in late September - one from each state, plus one from Canada and Puerto Rico.
I choose one teacher for each state. If you are in our exchange, you can request that I email you everyone's address so your students can address the postcards, or if you prefer, I will mail labels of all the mailing addresses of the other teachers involved - no cost to you! All you have to do is have your students bring in postcards from your state and mail one postcard to each teacher in our exchange.
Besides having this be a great Social Studies project, you can make it a Language Arts project too, and the students can write a short note about their state. Most teachers use a store-bought card and copy a message onto each card. Some teachers make a homemade card and copy the message for each card. Whatever you want to do is up to you!
We will all mail the postcards out on Sept. 24th, and in a few weeks after that you will receive a postcard from each of the 50 states, Puerto Rico and Canada.
I hope you can join us! You can reach me at [email removed]
(I have a high SPAM filter, but I will get your email if you write POSTCARD EXCHANGE in the subject!)
Hello, I am a new teacher looking for any information re: openings in the East Mountain area schools. If anybody has an inside scoop regarding any such openings...I would greatly appreciate it!

1. It is desireable. It used to be very desireable so more people got it, but it still helps you get jobs-- in fact I think it's how I got my job. It also gives you a higher salary. As for getting it, you need about 7 or so courses which UNM and College of Santa Fe (there is a brance in ALbuquerque) offer in the evenings. For ESL, you need about 2 semesters of college Spanish, but you might be able to test out, Linguistics, and about 5 or 6 courses on things like Language Development or Second Language Literacy. Find out from the State Department of Education what you need- NOT from UNM-- as UNM will tell you to take more classes than you need to. When you apply for your NM license check off that you want the ESL endorsement and they'll write you and tell you what classes you still need to take. You might also try to get the "bilingual endorsement" which is VERY desireable but requires taking challenging tests in reading and writing in Spanish, including dialects.
2. I don't know about Santa Fe. The ALbuquerque job market is decent because there's about 80 elementary school. Keep a daily eye out on the [link removed].
Some elementary schools with lots of Spanish speaking kids that are known to be well run with good principals and places many like teaching in are La Mesa (but their principal just retired), Eugene Field, Longfellow (their program is dual so you also have English-speaking kids there to learn Spanish), Dolores Gonzales, and East San Jose.
I teach 6, 7, and 8th grade learning disabilities. I am looking for new ideas to make my room a very comfortable setting for the students. In the past I have used alot of Garfield decor, but want to change for this fall. Any ideas out there? Thanks, jean

A great group of teachers is looking for several states to join our yearly postcard exchange. We are only interested in dedicated teachers who are willing to be 100% committed to this project, so please only respond if you are truly interested. Unless you have wonderful parent volunteers who are willing to supply your postcards and stamps, you will most likely spend around $50 total on postcards and stamps. Please keep that in mind!
Each teacher is responsible for sending one postcard to each participating teacher (you will send out 49 postcards and in turn receive 49 postcards). Messages on the postcards can be written by your students (or by you if you teach younger grades), and may include interesting facts about the city/state you live in, state symbols, etc. A complete address list will be emailed to you by September 1st (possibly earlier if we have 100% participation by then). The deadline for sending your postcards is October 31st.
If you are interested in joining, please email me the following information:
Your name The grade you teach Your school's name Your school's address Your email address Your school's website or your classroom website address
Once again, please only reply if you are certain that you will be able to participate fully in our exchange. Thanks!!
