I'm currently at a university in Illinois pursuing a Biology major with a secondary education minor, complete with and Illinois State Teaching License. However, I want to teach in NM. My question:
What would I do first in order to get a job? Would I apply for a NM teaching certificate through the reciprocity path and then start applying for jobs, or should I find a job first and then get the license? If I applied for the certification first, how long does it usually take?
My only other question is what tips you all have for finding a job from another state. I'm not sure I'll have the funds to really support myself for 6 months or however it takes to find a job, so how hard is it to get a teaching job in NM through internet/phone/interview trips?
Possess a bachelor’s and/or a master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university; possess a current valid and standard certificate/license from another state/country; provide proof of having completed an approved teacher education program (if the program is not contained on a transcript, you must provide documented evidence of the program you completed); provide proof of passage of a teacher competency exam for that out-of-state/country certificate/license, and provide evidence of having satisfactorily taught under that out-of-state certificate/license from the school and/or supervisor where you taught.
So
since you have not taught, you might have to just take the tests and get the regular (level 1) license. I'm hoping your program included student teaching as there is no way around it.
and NM has three tests you have to take. You can do two on one day but then there is like 3 months b/w exams. Hope thats helpful.

NathanielThanks, that clears a few things up. I'll have to check into exactly how many of the NM exams I need to take. I think some, like Content and Basic Skills, might transfer between states, but I would have to check. Anyways, thanks a lot for the response!
I hope to move to NM in fall 2010 and wanted to know if New Mexico's teachers pay social security? I have not paid much in in Texas and would like to do so now. Thanks, Vivian

This seems to be true just about everywhere. My fields are English, Spanish, Special Ed. and ESL. Surely there are openings, especially with all-level special ed. Which areas of the state tend to have the most openings? Thanks.

I have a level 2 teacher license in NM and taught for four years I then moved to Arizona and taught for a few years and got my masters degree. I am moving back to NM and see that I can move to level 3 without a dossier because of my out of state teaching ex. and of course my masters has anyone else done this and did it work out??
On 1/08/10, Denise wrote:...See MoreYou need to talk to the PED -- State Public Ed Department. Level 3 also depends on "leadership" roles within the school, etc. The dossier is one method to move from level 1 to level 2, but only the State PED can decide what you need to do. My own experience is the Masters helps w/$, but not really licensure level.

I am a retired teacher and my husband and I will be moving to NM this summer. I am 54 and young for my age and healthy. Would it be possible for me to land a teaching job? Thanks for any advice. (Hopefully not too negative!) vm
