Hi, I am currently a second year teacher in Texas---second career after 16 years in child welfare. I love teaching....and I love New Mexico. Therefore, I am beginning plans to move and have already applied for next school year believe it or not. I just wanted to go on and get my app on file. Any tips or info to share? I think the pay is quite low in comparison to where I am currently. Can you tell me the higher paying areas? What about charter schools versus public? I'm looking at the Santa Fe/Taos/Albuquerque areas. Oh, and I teach science and prefer that subject. Please share your thoughts.

dejai I still can't believe the pay that I'm seeing. We are underpaid here in Texas, but as a second year teacher I'm at about 44K. Next year I will be atleast 45K or 46. Is the cost of living that low in NM (looking at Santa Fe area) where teachers are actually able to live off 30K????

Pecos Do you realize that your 44K is because your local district pays above the state minimum?

$44,270 is the Texas base pay for teachers with 20 years experience or more.

The base pay in Texas for a second year teacher is $27,910 and many districts pay that.

dejai Yes, I do realize that. WE....all teachers, are still underpaid in Texas or wherever for the jobs we do. I left a 50K job in social services to teach...a job that is more rewarding for me. However, I put in more hours in teaching than I did on my 50K job that I worked overtime on daily.

I still think the pay in New Mexico is pretty patheti...See More

rw As a single person, I not only lived in Albuquerque on $30K but I paid off $5K a year in college/car loans while doing it and put some towards retirement. But it's harder in Santa Fe than Albuquerque, and the rents have been going up. In the rural areas rents will be prett ylow. It also depends on your lifestyle. I didn't travel or buy electronics/...See More
