Possible move to Nevada

Hello. I have been an educator for several years. I know nothing about the area and currently live several states away. I have three school aged children. Can you recommend high quality areas to live and reasons why? I think my husband will be working around the casino area.

I hope to ease my anxiety about this move. Thanks so much for your time!!

Why do you want your child to go to a Catholic school? On 2/27/14,

There are several in the area (K-8), but only one Catholic HS. Lots of good neighborhoods in Reno. Ours is only 15 minutes from the airport, easy access to shopping, the library, etc. And, by an area where you can hike, attend programs, and so forth.

I DO know what I am talking about. I am not trying to look for "sympathy," so stop with the cheap psychobabble. Just because YOU haven't yet been targeted and scapegoated doesn't mean it will NEVER happen to you or to anybody else. It is NOW becoming the rule, not the exception, if you would get your head out of your rear end and pay attention to what is going on all over the country with teachers. WCSD is NOT good for anybody who is a veteran teacher or who is over 50. Any more cheap shots, and your posts will be flagged for removal.

I'd also suggest "Doc" that if you think you are so knowledgeable about education in Nevada, you'd better be worried about all of the TFAs who are now being approved for hire in CCSD. Don't think you have any kind of job security there. You don't.

Frankly, teachers.net is not a good place for people who plan on moving to a different part of the country to ask about schools, jobs, moving, etc. City-Data is the place to go for that kind of thing. Sorry, I live in Vegas, not Reno. They're about 400 miles away and quite different. My guess is that you probably don't want to live around casinos either in Reno. Casinos... don't create the best immediate area.

If Reno's anything like Vegas, there aren't that many Catholic schools. Both Vegas and Reno really grew up over the last few decades... Most Catholic schools Back East are very old institutions, so we don't have nearly as many out here. Catholic education is not a growth industry... That's not to say there aren't any.

If you're thinking about working there..., I think they have looser licensing requirements according to the State, but again, private and Catholic schools aren't my thing. You should definitely get your license application in ASAP though.

You have never offered anyone a constructive piece of advice on this board other than to give up all hope. I work as a teacher in Nevada TODAY, not six years ago, and will be an administrator next year. People are making productive careers in education in Nevada. I work with a lot of them and I am one of them. I know, you think the boogey man will get me and everyone else..., right. If the OP wants to build a career here, she has the opportunity.

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, but you are not everyone. In fact, you are actually in a small minority. Most people who get hired by CCSD and WCSD, don't get fired. In fact, a majority will stay long enough to earn a pension. Not exactly a revolving door. STOP trying to drag everyone down. Some of us... MOST of us are doing just fine, and yeah, we will need to hire new teachers next year in this state. There is opportunity here, despite what you say.
