Tina/OH/5My daughter just moved to Lakewood, but lived in Cleveland Heights (Coventry area) prior to that. She really liked the "downtown" area and there were lots of Case Western students that lived around her. It might be worth a look.

Has anyone written a grant for this foundation in Ohio? Were you successful? What was the grant on? I'm looking at writing one for technology to increase reading/writing OAT scores in a middle school special education classroom. Thanks for any input.
Don't be general: I want to spend $2500 on a smartboard and other supplies as needed.
Type it and spell check it multiple times. Ask someone else to read it for clarification. It might seem clear to you, but it may not be.
Toot your own horn. Demonstrate your leadership skills, and especially how you will involve other staff with your prospective grant.

There is a new website for teachers to sell or purchase classroom materials. It organizes items by content area, grade level and there is a monthly prize for buyers/sellers. Check it out and clean out your basement!
I have a provisional (7-12) in math but I haven't been able to find any good teaching positions around the Cincinnati area....The districts that seem good are impossible to get into and the charter schools are terrible around here. Is there a shortage in jobs?
Still, here's what I did this year. I bookmarked every school district website in the Northern Kentucky/ Southeast Indiana/Cincinnati area. Check their employment pages DAILY. If a position pops up, DON'T wait to write a resume, cover letter and call to inquire into the position. It's officially crunch-time and you would not be unwise to even have your materials overnight-delivered by the post office if you don't personally deliver them to the board offices yourself. Talk to anyone and everyone who is a teacher, was a teacher or knows a teacher. Get in touch with any teacher you ever did any field hours with. Of course you don't want to sound desperate to total strangers but don't be afraid to talk about your eagerness to get into the classroom this year in front of others. You just never know who might know someone or know of some position opening up.
I was fortunate enough to receive two job offers this year. One was at a private school in Cincinnati and another at a public school in another city. When I sat down and really considered my options, I decided that the private school position in Cincinnati was too uncertain for me to turn down for the public school one. Had the public school position not opened up, however, you better believe I would have taken the private school one. I guess the point, like others have said, is that if you want to be a teacher badly enough, you will work with any kids at any building in any district. If you feel that taking a position at one of the tougher charter schools in Cincinnati is not something you're up for, you might consider looking into instructional assistant (aide) positions and long-term subbing positions. Only you know what you're willing to accept but at the same time, it never hurts to apply to anything and everything just in case
We KNOW how tough it is and how disheartening it can be to NOT hear anything. There were 22 openings posted in Cleveland since March in his field AND he applied to them all!!! When we would hear that a position was filled and he wasn't called, we would be deflated!
Here's what we did. I won't mention the site because I don't want anyone to think this is an ad. There is a website that produces personalized candy wrappers. I ordered them, called them The Mark Bar and I had all of his credentials printed on them. It was like $50 for 25. After he filled out the on-line apps (we did this after we had sent out like 15 resumes), he would follow up in person with a bound copy of all of his documents and a candy bar.
It may seem hokey, but once he started doing that, he got 6 phone calls!!!!!!!! He made it to the final three at one (didn't get the offer there) that did get a candy bar, got offered the job he accepted from a school that did get a candy bar and has had to cancel/decline 4 interviews that ALL got candy bars! How nice is that!?
As one HR person told me when I called and found out he had not even been called and the position was filled "I get HUNDREDS of resumes from basically the same (type of) candidate, how do I decide who to interview" she said on paper, you basically all are the same.
The candy bar just helped him stand out to get the interview. He got the job!
Good luck. I know how frustrating this can be!

M.KenI'm not sure about the testing cuts, however I am sure that Praxis III has been eliminated in Ohio earlier this year. I was told by my superintendent that the state will come up with something else for those of us with a 2 year provisional who have not had the opportunity to complete the Praxis III.
MalindaKen I read that the grade 5 social studies test would be being given only if the state can budget for the it. I think I also read that the Reading test for Grade 5 OAT will become a literacy test-- language arts. I don't know about the Praxis III, it doesn't apply to me.
They have AWESOME products from all the companies that I buy from and lots of deals on the ebay store (the link is on their homepage). I'm from the Akron area and found their retail store and LOVED it! They ship nationwide though =)
