It can take a while. You need to apply for the alternative certification route, once approved you need to schedule and take your oget and osat. Once you pass the osat and oget you are awarded an alternative certificate and can take a job, but Then you have to complete at least nine hours of additional course work in education. and at some point you need to pass the opte and finally after all of that your alternative certificate should convert to a standard certificate.
Any hints on how long they prefer this to be? Having a science background, I am prone to short and to the point. I would hate to go overboard and provide a dissertation.
I'm considering the alt certification program, but it is confusing. I read about the tests, but do I also need coursework? I don't have any education training, but I have a BS and MA in English, and I teach at a community college.
Unfortunately, teaching as an adjunct is about to leave me homeless! I love teaching, and I hate the idea of giving it up to earn a wage that will support me. I'm single, and my support system is in the process of collapse.
I live in Missouri, but I used to live in OKC and Moore. I love Oklahoma! I never had a decent education until my father was relocated there during my first year of junior high school. I had so many excellent teachers there. I would love to move back there and give back to the same system that inspired me to love learning.
Can anyone tell me the process? What course work is necessary, if any, or would I just register for all of the testing? I don't have the funds for more college course work. I just don't. I can afford the testing, and relocation.
Help! I'm a first generation college student. My family could care less that I have two degrees and that I have become a teacher. I don't have a mentor in Oklahoma to help me learn to navigate the system, and I can't afford to begin the process only to find out I can't complete it.
Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated. If I can't find some help, I will be forced to go back to being a secretary and to give up teaching.
8. Are charter school teachers required to be highly qualifi ed under NCLB?
Yes, charter school teachers must hold at least a bachelor's degree and must demonstrate competence in the core academic areas in which they teach. Charter school teachers must mee t the certification requirements established in the state's public charter school law, which may differ from the require ments for full state certification. In Oklahoma, state certi fication is not required by law, therefore a charter school teacher does not have to hold an Oklahoma certificate to be Highly Qualified.

When you say "In Oklahoma, state certi > fication is not required by law," does that mean for public schools too?
I have a BS and an MA in English, but I don't have any teacher certifications. Could I teach in Oklahoma? I'm in Missouri.

He graduated from a reciprocating state and the transfer to OK teaching certification should have been an easy one. He submitted his paperwork in June and expected to be OK certified by the beginning of the school year. He has been teaching in the position, and was told that he will receive sub pay until his certificate comes in the mail from the Oklahoma Department of Education. His certificate did arrive with an effective date of July 1st, but an issued date of Sept 11. Tulsa public schools says they go by the issued date. This difference in language has cost him thousands of dollars- docking him 15 days for non-contract days. He is outraged and is now looking for alternative locations to work. How does OK expect to recruit certified and highly qualified teachers when this type of policy exists? My advice to new graduates is to look elsewhere- other states use the emergency cert policies and expedite paperwork to put highly qualified individuals in positions. OK will most likely loose the new candidates they acquired- shame on them, no way to treat people!
I have a degree in psychology and have spent four years as a tobacco cessation counselor. I have applied to obtain my alternative certificate in social studies in Oklahoma. Do you feel my work experience will be acceptable?
I'm curious as to how long does it take to get the "official" certification after the documents are submitted to the state? I don't want to be checking single sign-on every day, lol.
