Has anyone run into difficulties getting hired as a teacher with your alt. cert? I have relatively no experience in the classroom and am starting to get discouraged. Any advice?

The outgoing teacher taught for one year, did a great job, but decided she wanted to go back to school for her masters in fashion design instead. I've worked here myself for five years. It's a good workplace where I am treated like a professional and I am left alone to do my job. My colleagues are friendly and talented. As a matter of fact, in the five years I've been here, I've never heard of any teachers who just throw worksheets at the students and sit at their desks, which is mildly astonishing, now that I think of it. The kids here are by and large nice, and the admin has always backed me up when I've had a problem parent. As a matter of fact, I take them on trips abroad here, whereas when I worked in Virginia Beach for six years I wouldn't even consider it. This is not the richest school, nor the poorest. The town is nice, with two little universities, an active community theater, three cinemas, a few good restaurants and many adequate ones, and other amenities expected in a medium-sized town. I am taking the Early Childhood and Business OSAT next week. I would be interested in knowing if anyone has recently took those tests. I have the small study guides that you can purchase, but would like to know how accurate the guide is to the test. Also, how were the essays for each?
The business test was more difficult than I thought. There were several accounting and computer tech questions on it. The essay dealt with a marketing business plan for a company. Hope this helps.
Response to 5/24/09 on the OPTE, >Personally I thought that the OPTE was the hardest test of the three state boards. There could be 2 possible answers out of the choices but one answer is more correct then the other answers. I found this test to be difficult. I had to draw on all of my teaching experience not including lecture from our professors and their classroom experiences. Some of the answers you could reason out and others you had to determine what would be most appropriate for the situation. I was glad that I passed the first time and that I didn't have to take it again. Immediatly after I took the exam I was just hoping that I would at least pass, but once I received my scores I did alot better then I thought originally. Good luck and I hope this helps.
I graduate from my teaching program in December. I'm wondering if it is even realistic to think I'll find a job in an elementary school in the middle of the school year. Anyone have any ideas?
How many 5k students do you have in your classroom? What is the law for the maximum? We are suppose to have around 25 with one aid per grade level for all 5 teachers & the special needs students to share. This will be happening in first and second grades, too. We have full inclusion at our school site.
jIf I remember, mine was a poem. You had to anaylze it and say what period it came from...it was hard! Poetry is not my thing, so it was difficult to figure out the meaning.
I actually didn't pass the essay by a few points, but made up for it on the objective part.
CallieElementary Education 050 & 051 cover 7th and 8th in a self-cantained classroom. You only need the individual tests if the school is departmentalized.
You can teach 1-8 in a self contained classroom, if you have your elementary education and intermediate math passed. One can only teach 1-6th grade if one does not have the middle/ intermediate math endorsement, but the elementary education endorsement.
I, too, am going the alternative route, but not for WH/Geo. I just took the OGET on May 30. It was easy, just basics. It was 100 questions with an essay. You're allowed 4 hours - I finished in 3.5. There is a lot of reading comprehension. It sounds like you are doing all the right things with the study guides. One hint I have heard over and over concerns the "constructed response" essay and that is to fill the pages. If there are four pages available, write at least 3.75 pages. Use the booklet to put your thoughts in order/pre-write tasks, then write the essay.
Don't forget to attend PASS IT ONin your region. It is a free conference and the presenters are our own Oklahoma teachers. I am presenting at two regions, Woodward and OKC. For more information go to [link removed]
As I am Alternatively Certifying, I am sure this woudl be of great help. I do have a few questions that were not addressed in the weblinks - cost? being the most important.
