Becoming a 'teacher' in Oklahoma with this Economy?

Hi there!

I am in the process of getting my Bach Degree in Education (Elementary) and just curious what other people think about the demand (if there is any) for teachers in general in Oklahoma? Does anyone think with all the layoffs, state of the economy, budget cuts, etc., that it's even worth going into Education at this point? I continue to want and hope that I can complete/finish my degree within the next 2 years but the the way everyone is talking- --it's a bad deal to be going into this field. However, I feel like everything is bound to turn around sooner or later and I should just stick with my current plan and plan on completing my degree. Anyone have any thoughts on this suject, I would appreciate hearing it...

Thanks for your feedback... It was very nice to hear something positive rather than negative for a change. Everyone gripes at me now for wanting to go into 'education' because they complain about the pay for teachers. However, most of my friends who say this have not went to college and really aren't sure what teacher's make. I just cannot see myself staying at my current job for $9 an hour, no insurance, and no retirement! Once again, thanks for your feedback!

Wel its not all about the pay. Im going to be taking about a $15k pay cut to leave an unfulfilling job to be a teacher. Of course the large amount of time off does work to counterbalance this.

Former Okie from T-Town Do what you LOVE! If it's teaching, stay in it!!!

I was laid off from Tulsa Public Schools. Then I applied for a teaching job at the last minute in Texas. Oh my goodness, the principal hired me so fast that my head was spinning! Not to mention that my salary was $15,000 higher and I made the best choice.

While the economy has affected teaching jobs everywhere, Texas continues to build schools quite often. Your chances of finding a position out here is MUCH greater than in Oklahoma. (Let's not forget about the $$$ either.)

If you choose to stay in Oklahoma, I wish you good luck on your search. Never give up!!! :)
