I am working on my CA credential and will be done in one year. At that time I am planning to move to the Portland area. Does anyone have any experience with getting an Oregon credential from a California credential? Any tips or helpful comments?
This book gives you an idea of what the test quest...See MoreThere's a book you can prep for the Civil Rights test although the book's price will set you back about 30 dollars. There is no other way to prep for it. The questions are mostly situational questions like what should a teacher do in this case, that sort of thing.

This book gives you an idea of what the test questions will look like, and there is a practice test at the end of the book.

Whoever deemed that elementary teachers have to know everything about what they teach but who do NOT need to be "experts" in the different subjects they teach but DO need to know about classroom management, child development, pedagogy, special education law, diversity, and a host of other things, does not know anything about education. On the elementary level, you need to know HOW to teach not WHAT to teach. You are supplied with the materials based on the standards for the state. You do NOT need to know physical education and music because they are almost always taught by specialists. As for art, it is typically integrated into whatever subject you are teaching in the core areas of science, language arts, social science, and math. Oregon's standards are crazy, and it seems one has to pass the multiple subjects tests before embarking on a teacher education program. Those of us who are licensed from out of state are up the creek unless we have taught a single subject area for I think three or five years to be equal to somebody with no teaching experience. It is insane. The only thing I qualify for is substituting despite having a master's degree and six years of experience, and there is no way in Oregon one can make a living at it.
I think it is long overdue for a court challenge over so-called reciprocity agreements, which in reality do not exist, and the "highly qualified" requirements of NCLB, which have no relevance for elementary education teachers.

Our project centers around a stuffed puppy named Ollie! He wants to travel across the country meeting children from each state. We are looking for a participating class from EACH OF THE 50 STATES! (This project combines a traveling buddy and a 50 state postcard exchange)
TO LEARN MORE… [link removed].
Ollie will travel around the country. He will have time to visit each class for ONE DAY ONLY. If he stayed longer, and it took him a week to get to the next state, it would end up taking almost a full year for his journey (remember, there are 50 states and 52 weeks in a year)!! We want to hurry him along on his journey so that he is able to make a full trip around the United States before school lets out for summer (many let out in May).
Each class will send a postcard to the other classes to let them know that Ollie has arrived safely. We can learn more about your area if you also include other information about your state.
Please also send 1-2 paragraphs by email describing what your class did with Ollie. Include digital pictures and/or links to your classroom or school web pages! I will add this to his online travel journal, so all classes can keep track of his travels!

Hi, I am considering getting a California teaching credential (multiple subject) from National University, but may move to Oregon within the next 3 years. I haven't spoken with OED yet to see how easily the credential would carry over to Oregon. Can anyone give me advice on this as well as some general advice on salaries and whether I should get a master's as well?
Hi! I am trying to find out if anyone in Oregon is using my music yet, just out of curiousity. I know of 34 out of 50 states that have at least one person that uses HeidiSongs- but not Oregon. Is there anyone from Oregon out there using Sing and Spell or Jumpin' Numbers? Heidi
Thinking about sending a grandson there. He is not into gangs drugs but just is not motivated to do school work. Would this be and o.k. place. What have to heard of Bachalor Accademy in Priveville? Thanks Sharon
If you are an elementary teacher who would like to participate in a postcard exchange, email me your school address and your grade level. You would need to send out postcards from your state and in exchange your class would receive postcards from other states. It is great fun for students to learn about "snail mail" and to learn about our country. I hope you can join us! Eileen

I'm strongly considering becoming an ESL teacher. I have several years of experience in the field but no TESOL certification or masters. Therefore, I'd like to get a TESOL MA and certification for the public schools. Does anyone have an idea as to whether I could get a job in a public school in Oregon if I have the TESOL MA and certification?
