Hello! I will be visiting Portland next week. I have searched on the internet and have yet to come up with any teacher/educational supply stores other than Learning Palace. Are there any that you can recommend in the Portland area?
It's not a teacher supply store, but "SCRAP" is a fantastic source for supplies. Everything is used/recycled and super cheap. You can get bags of colored pencils, pens, highlighters, also things like construction paper, and all kinds of interesting gadgets and odds-n-ends. Just Google "SCRAP, Portland" and you'll find it.

Unemployment is so tricky. You should look at the website for it, there's lots of info there. They look at 4 Qtrs of work history, starting BEFORE the quarter we're currently in (something like that). So this is August, that's 3rd Qtr ... so they would look at your work history from July 06 through July 07 (I think that's how it works). And then the amount of money you get is based on your earnings during that time, and never to exceed a certain amount per week (which I think is around $500 or so). You can even file for unemployment online - the rules are tricky, but there's lots of help available online.
Hope that helps!

I applied and begin receiving unemployment based on my employment last year. I'm still looking, but it's nice to have the help.
Oregon Public Broadcasting is launching a new project, called the Public Insight Network, and I think it may be of interest to the teachers on this listserv.
We're inviting people from around the state to become 'public sources' for OPB. People in the Public Insight Network tell us about areas in which they have experience or expertise. Then, when we are working on a story related to their experiences, we ask them what they know about the topic, what angles haven't been covered previously and who else we should talk to.
We'll be using the network to cover a wide variety of topics. When education issues come up, we would like to be able to tap into the experiences and observations of educators throughout the state.

Thanks for your help,

I never heard of them. But I checked the sample questions - and I got a lot of them wrong - so I bought the full set for twenty dollars. I think they are pretty good.
I am an art teacher from Michigan considering relocation to Oregon among other states. What do teaching jobs pay there? I have heard that the education system in Oregon is not sound as far as employment and that housing can be pricey. is this true? i have always been attracte to Oregon because its very green minus the midwestern snow. How is the economy in general? Any jobs outside teaching?

I currently live and teach in Oregon, we use edzapp.com to apply for jobs in almost every district. I love oregon but Oregon has 11 universities/colleges with Teacher Prep programs, cometition is steep out here. i substituted for a year before landing at a provate school, others I know have been subbing for years. We get paid horribly and treated as bad. I love Orego though so I am willing to struggle through.
Good Luck.

My class will be reading the story the Gingerbread Man and doing a project with it. I am asking if anyone would mind assisting with this... if you would like to please email me at [email removed].
Project letter: My name is the Gingerbread Man, my friend in CLass 2H was reading a story about me and i jumped out of the storybook to visit you. My friend at school is wondering where I have run to. Please help them by sending them a picture postcard showing them the area where you live. This postcard will be posted on a large map of the world outside of my classroom. This will help the children by showing them how different parts of the world look. I know my friends will enjoy hearing from you and learning where I have run! Thank you for your help! Got to go! The Gingerbread Man

Looking for Mike Campbell, elementary teacher ... if you were our 'best man' 21 years ago and part of 6th Ward, please contact us. We're still at same place.
If you think you know Mike, please pass on the message. Last we heard he was planning to teach first-grade in Portland Metro area.
This is probably too late, anyway . . .
