Teaching experience in Portland, OR

I have a BA in English and writing. I plan on becoming an English and writing teacher at the secondary level. I admit that I haven’t spent much time working with teenagers in an academic setting, but I’d like to get my foot in the door. Do I have to have a Masters degree to sub or to be a classroom assistant in Portand, OR? Or does anyone else have tips on how I can get that experience? Thank you all.

TeachinTucson No, you don't need your Master's to sub and that is a good way to get some experience before deciding if you want to become a teacher. But, when I was living there, they already had so many subs in PDX district that they wouldn't accept me. I subbed for a bunch of other districts in the area. highdesertmama Sub jobs can come through either the district or the ESD where you live. For instance in Central Oregon all our subs come through the High Desert ESD. Best bet would be to check with the districts you would like to sub in and see where you need to sign up. ***If you don't have a teaching certificate you can only sub 60 days a year. check out

Type Restricted Substitute Teaching License Category Teacher Description The Restricted Substitute Teaching License is issued to applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree, but have not completed an educator-preparation program. It is valid for substitute teaching for up to 60 total days per year for a district or districts which has jointly applied for the license. Population There are 703 active Restricted Substitute Teaching Licenses (As of Sep 27, 2008 at 6 AM)
