I am starting a post card exchange for the 2007-2008 school year. We will start mailing out postcards September 10th and have them all mailed out by April 1st. I will email you a list of participants by August 27th with the addresses.
I want this to be a learning experience for my students. They will experience writing addresses and they will learn the locations and a few facts about each state. You can send pre-made postcards or make them yourself.
Once I get the list of participants (with their school addresses) I will mail one to everyone on the list. Each class would send a postcard to everyone on the list. So, by the end of the exchange, your class would send a postcard to hopefully every state and receive one from every state too! The real purpose is to have a fun way to study each state.
Please keep in mind that if you decide to drop out of the exchange, you need to let me know so the students are not disappointed. I want this to be an awesome experience for our students so, please sign up for our exchange.
Email me your name, address, email address, and state if you would like to join. You can participate from any grade level. [email removed]
Please join!! Here are the states we still need! Delaware Hawaii Idaho Iowa Kansas Louisiana Maine New Mexico Rhode Island South Dakota Utah Vermont Washington West Virginia Wisconsin
Email me if you would like to join! [email removed]
I am new to RI and applied for certification in May. My application is still pending- I have met all the qualifications and know that I will get my certification, but I'm wondering WHEN! Is anyone else waiting for their certification, or does anyone know exactly how long it takes?

Hello,
Please be patient your certificate will should arrive anywhere between 12-16 weeks that is why it is crucial to get your paperwork in early. Personally my experience with the Rhode Island Department of Education has been wonderful and I have found them to be very efficient.
I actually got my paperwork in very early in April, as soon as I knew I was moving- the proces has taken well over 16 weeks! Fortunately, I got a job in Mass so don't need the certification anyway

I'm a teacher from NYC and I'm organizing a postcard exchange for the 3rd year. We are sending and receiving postcards from all over the USA. I'm not sure if you're familiar but here's how it works: You have to purchase 50 postcards w/ your state's pictures on them. You also have to purchase postcard stamps. But you can either ask for a dollar from each student to help out w/ the costs or on your supply list, ask each student to purchase a postcard. I'm from NYC so postcards here are very cheap (20 for $1) so I only ask each kid to bring in $ for 2 stamps. Once you get your postcards, you and your students do some research about your state (ex. population, state bird, what's the weather like, fun things to do there, and write a little about your town and class) and you write this info on the back of the postcard and mail it out and you'll get 50 postcards back from all over the country! It's really a fun project for the kids. Let me know if you're still interested. Thanks! Amanda
This will be my 3rd year organizing a postcard exchange. Please note that we'd prefer bought photo postcards rather than made cards. All cards must be out by the last week of November. And only write me if you are really committed to making this project work. Are you interested in joining? Email me at:

I attended a Catholic School in RI for a good portion of my life. My question is, how does one find out about jobs at the Catholic School Level in RI? I have looked on the Diocese of Providence website, but all they show are the schools in the district, not any job opportunities.
You need to call the Diocese of Providnce office of Catholic Schools. Then they will send you an application. You need to interview with them first. They you will be put on a list for the principals of the catholic schools to know you've been cleared by the diocese. It is also helpful to send resumes to the schools that intrest you after you have interviewed with the diocese. In you cover letter be sure to tell the principals you are on the cleared list. Hope this helps. This information is about 10 year old, but th process in RI is only getting stricter.

Hello,
In response to your question you simply call the Catholic Schools Office and ask for Karen and she will send you the necessary paperwork.
I have seen the list of teacher salaries per district, but does anyone know where I could find how much each district pays substitutes (rather than go to each separate district, of course!) Thanks.
I have never seen a list of substitute teacher salaries for RI. That's not to say it's not out there; just that I have never seen it. As far as I know the only way to find out what a district pays its substitutes is to ask the district or someone who subbed last year in various districts.

Hello,
I am an educator who has had the experience of being blessed with my own classroom and also have substitute taught for various school districts and enjoyed them all. The range of pay for per diem and regular substitute teachers varies from school district to school district. Personally, I have been paid as little as $55.00 per day to $85.00 per day and I am a Highly Qualified Teacher holding multiple licenses. I hope this helps you. Also, remember to call the district in which you would like to work ie;human resource department and ask them directly.
Earlier this Spring I went through a very bad breakup and was forced to move. Now that I'm on my feet, I'm anxious to start subbing. How do I do this? Do I contact each district directly and ask them to mail me an application? I'm interested in Pawtucket, Providence, North Providence or East Providence. Should I pick 2 districts and "stick" with them? I've heard it's better to not be on too many lists. Also, does anyone have experience with subbing in these districts? I'm very worried about not getting called every day (or at least 3 or 4 times a week.) That's one of the reasons I've been so reluctant to apply. Thanks for the help!
Some districts have applications online. That might be a place to start. Personally, I'd go down to the district office and pick up an appliction in person.
Be sure you have a copy of your certification and be prepared to get fingerprinted.
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any tips on passing the Praxis PLT K-6. I am working towards certification as a school nurse teacher. I really have no teaching background. This test is required. Thank You, Emilie

Hi, I am lookignt o move to rhode island next year. I have been teaching for seven years in NY, i was wondering if anyone can give me a ballpark number for what my salary would be?
I am a high school math tecaher, how hard will it be to get a job?
Do i contact individual schools and/or princiopals? how do i apply for positions?
In most, if not all, districts apply to the central office. Hiring in most districts is done through the central office.
Start on your RI certification as soon as possible. There is a certification link on the state department of ed site to help you get started ([link removed].
As a high school math teacher you should be able to get a job. Some districts hired math teachers as late as October this year.
The district cannot hire you without certification unless they have made a diligent search for a certified candidate. So if you need to be hired with an emergency credential you will not get hired until after school starts.
This site has the Providence teacher salaries [link removed].
