The free resource, created by UK non-profit organization, Peace One Day, aims to advance active learning in the areas of conflict resolution, global citizenship, human rights and the link between sustainability and peace, using the UN International Day of Peace 21 September as a focus. The Resource provides 19 lesson plans and 26 classroom activities for exploring issues of peace, nonviolence, and the protection of the environment. The resources are linked to the documentary film, The Day After Peace, directed by POD founder, Jeremy Gilley. The film charts Jeremy’s journey to establish the first annual day of global ceasefire and nonviolence with a fixed calendar date; culminating with Jude Law accompanying Jeremy Gilley to Afghanistan to spearhead a massive vaccination against Polio on Peace Day, thus proving that the day works, the day saves lives. In April 8000 free copies of the film were delivered to schools encompassing grades 6 – 12 in the six New England States.
Each lesson plan refers to National standards and fit well within the frameworks of History/Social Studies, Civics and Government Studies, English/Language Arts, Environmental Science and more. I am putting together a 50 postcard exchange! I am collecting address of interested teachers- 1 from each state. I am desperately in need of Rhode Island! For our exchange, each class is required to send a postcard from their state to each of the other classes. If all goes as planned, you should receive 49 postcards- 1 from each other state in return. This is a great way to teacher about the US and makes a really fun bulletin board! If you are interest, please email me at [email removed]:

It is a fantastic tool to not only empower students to engage in making a difference in their schools, communities and the greater world at large, but also instigates celebration projects with themes of intercultural relations in the lead up to Peace Day which is just over a month away. This is my third year teaching, I...See MoreI am certified in both New Hampshire and New Mexico in English 7-12. (I grew up in New Hampshire.) I'm desperately trying to obtain my RI certification, so I can move home. I'd love to teach in an urban school district (Providence perhaps?), but it seems I'm caught in the snag of the certification process.
This is my third year teaching, I've taken Praxis I and II, but I've just learned that now I have to take the Principles of Learning test to be certified in RI. Is this true? Praxis I and II do not count towards my RI certification??
What is more, I've called the nearest testing center and it seems as they do not offer this specific test. We've already started our school year (this week!), so flying to RI to test isn't feasible. I am working on my New Mexico Level II license, but I can't turn in my Dossier until June, and I was hoping to be certified in RI and interviewing by that point.
I'm frustrated beyond comprehension. I want nothing more than to be working in RI Public schools, and it seems that I'm continually hitting road blocks. I know it takes 4 months for the application process and I really wanted all of this taken care of by January. What are your thoughts? What if I can't find a way to take this test? My biggest fear is moving to RI and not being in the classroom. I love our profession so much that not being in the classroom would be devastating.
Unfortunately that seems true. Applicants need to take Principles of Learning and Teaching (one of the Praxis II series) before certification. Don't throw away your Praxis scores. Which Praxis II did you take?

Did you check the ETS website ([link removed].
When you finish New Mexico level II you can be certified here by reciprocity according to the website. Is your New Hampshire certificate level II? Applicants certified by reciprocity do not need to take the test prior to certification.

I understand your desire to move home. However please realize there are very few jobs here right now and the outlook for next year is not much better. Unless you have RI certification in hand you most likely will not be hired over someone with certification no matter how qualified you are. Unless the rules change the department of ed requires that they certify there is no certified teacher available before they hire someone without current certification.
I'd double check with ETS about the test. You may have been given incorrect information.
With RI certification in hand and having taught in New Mexico you will be a desirable candidate. It may still be tough getting a job but you should get some interviews.

The MWV Children’s Museum is hosting the First Annual Early Childhood Conference, “Come Play With Me!” Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Kennett Senior High School, in North Conway, NH.
This conference came to fruition through discussions between Deb Meader, Carroll County Child Care Resource and Referral Program Manager; Ida Streeter, Director, Madison Preschool; and Kate Stanley, Lead Toddler Teacher and Co-Director, Cornerstone Kids. “We all felt strongly that the Mount Washington Valley needed a conference for Early Childhood Educators that was affordable and close to home,” sates Ida Streeter. “With the new Child Care Licensing regulations, Early Childhood Educators will now be required to obtain gradually more workshop training hours over the next 3 years. The ‘Come Play With Me!’ Conference gives us an opportunity to gain 5 ½ hours in one day.”
The importance of play in the lives of young children is a key focus for the MWV Children’s Museum. “When this idea came about it seemed like a great fit for us,” says Shelly Morin, Executive Director of the MWV Children’s Museum. “Early Childhood Educators live the importance of play daily and it is important for us to share that passion with them and parents of young children.”
The Keynote Speaker for the “Come Play With Me!” Conference will be Kathy Sosny, Coordinator of Disability Services, Early Childhood Professor and Academic Support Director at White Mountains Community College. Kathy has been teaching young children and adults for over 40 years about the importance of play. Her Keynote Address, “Come Play With Me,” is sponsored by Carroll County Child Care Resource and Referral.
Many Mount Washington Valley programs are sponsoring workshops at the “Come Play With Me!” Conference. Mountain View Montessori, Growing Tree Learning Center, Preschool Technical Assistance Network (with funding provided by the NH DHHS/Child Development Bureau), Carroll County Child Care Resource and Referral, Madison Preschool are all sponsoring workshops from Hands-on Math and Science to Creating Preschool Portfolios to Document Children’s Learning.
“The ‘Come Play With Me!’ Conference is not only a great way to gain training hours for Early Childhood Educators!” states Kate Stanley. “It’s also a great way for parents, grandparents, and anyone who spends time with young children to learn about the importance of play in their lives!”
Registration for the “Come Play With Me!” Conference has begun! Register soon, space is limited!
Register before September 1, 2009 and it’s only $30 to attend (lunch is included!). After September 1, 2009, registration is $35 to attend.
