This information sounds alittle off base. I have my certificaton for English and Language Arts and have been trying since May to secure a teaching position in South Carolina. I have gotten one interview. If schools are so hard up they need to hire uncertified teachers it must be their thinking they can hire on the cheap, thus teachers are quiting or not showing up. I couldnt get an interview until my certification was posted on Cerra. I would like to hear what some of the established teachers have to say.
I, for example, am a teacher of Special Ed -ED. I have a BA and a Masters degree in a non-teaching, related field and many years of related experience. I entered the PACE program (for lateral certification) and am working in a Special Ed ED classroom as a "highly qualified" teacher- even though I don't have a full- fledged teaching certificate yet.
In the lateral-entry program, you get your certification while working. Over three years, after taking 3 Praxis exams (for Spec Ed), 3 Masters level courses (even if you have a Masters), taking the PLT, and completing the PACE program (several 2 wk intensives, weekend intensives, etc), and going through ADEPT (SAFE-T) you earn your teaching certification.
If you look at them at any point in that process, you might think they're just people "off the street." That wouldn't be accurate.
So, I guess I'm wondering if some of the teachers you're talking about are in the same boat. Or are you referring to "teachers" with no certification and no program toward certification?

Yesterday, we got a strongly worded email that advised us to be at our duty posts on time or to contact a colleague to cover for us. This is unpaid duty that is either 35 minutes before school, during one's lunch, or after school. Unpaid duty.
This year, we also have been told that we will have limited subs. So, if we exceed our sick days (something like 4 sick days) we will have to give up our planning to cover for each other. Nothing better to build strong relationships--all those teachers with sick kids are going to be in trouble.
This is in addition to the normal, horrid stuff. I think I will be heading to a union state soon.
Oh, yeah, right. I forgot that I am supposed to suck it up and be happy. Know what? I don't care about budget cuts. I care about being treated with the respect that my "profession" supposedly demands. I am continually asked to do more and more and more for less and less, and I am treated more like a student than an adult by administration. Take a look at the post from the teacher from Zucker and perhaps you will see what I mean, for the "I" here refers to teachers in general. I don't understand the mentality here, I really don't. SC has got to be the most passive state I have taught in. Why do teachers here tolerate it? (Apart from the no-union stuff, of course.) Hope you have a great school year, too!!! The only reason it will be great for me is that it will be my last in this state.
I have already started a teaching position, but have been offered another position which is in a better school and county. Simply, what can be done to break my current contract with out my certification being suspended for one year?
