Hello, I am entertaining the idea of moving there. I have never even been to SC before. I am wanting a total change from AZ. I am a certified K-8 Elementary and 7-12 Secondary English teacher. I have the majority of my experience in K- 8, but no official TRADITIONAL high school English experience yet. I am currently teaching high school-age youth i...See More

    Will Rogers Tony,

First of all, no, not all unions are bad. The bad thing is that ost of them have become corrupted by people who are in it for the money. We end teacher abuses by ALL teachers becoming intelligent and knowledgeable abouot the political process and become political leaders where we live.

We CAN work together in groups, but rem...See More

TechnoMage There is way too much wrong in this account to be correct. Even in the state of SC there are laws which forbid the outcomes you described. Sometimes when you are dealing with an ass you need a Lawyer. This sounds like such a case. They CAN only get away with these things if you let them. But they CAN get away with these things IF you LET them. DON'...See More

Are there schools in SC where they hire teachers in Russian?

Are you daft? Most South Carolinians, especially teachers, have a great deal of difficulty with English. However some SC school district might hire a Russian language teacher as a political novelty

What are the qualifications to become an assistant principal in SC? Another teacher and I were talking and she said that an administrative degree wasn't necessary, only 18 hours of credit. I find that hard to believe. We looked on the SCDE site but didn't see anything. Does anyone know?
clanna I think it depends on the district and the title. Some assistants are "titled" curriculum specialists.

Representation by a strong collective bargaining organization for the teachers of SC is a good idea. For teachers are the only class of employees that I am aware of that the SC legislature has by law intentionally removed the right of due process. When you sign a contract to teach in any public SC school you also sign away your right to due process...See More

Cola Teacher We have about 24,000 students 54 teachers were just certified. I'm not sure how many teachers teach in my district.

Does your school use NWEA MAP test? Many, including myself would like to see this test replace the PASS test. So, I am curious as to how many schools are already using MAP in addition to PASS. Thanks.

Clanna Nora, The test your son took is called Primary MAP. It is designed for K and 1st grade students. My district in the upstate of SC is piloting the Primary MAP for first graders this year. Our K- 5 are not tested with MAP. Scores for first grade are reported. The scores are norm-referenced. There is an average score depending on the time of yrear the...See More

I'm going through the PACE program and looking for a job teaching Social Studies. Either HS or MS. Anyone know of job opportunities becoming available in Horry, Dillon, Florence, G'Town, Marion counties?

Hi. We had a pay freeze this year in North Carolina, and, of course, we all hate it. Did you get a pay freeze this year? Or were you lucky to get a raise?

    Will Rogers Cindy,

When one types fast...mistakes happen. :-) But I disagree, I believe the SOuth to be more progressive in some things, better at others, and right along with the rest of the nation in the rest. And if you actually look at all the states, not just what others tell you, you will see you are wrong my dear one. I had the honor of doing a...See More

Is it required by law anywhere that schools and school districts provide a planning period for teachers in South Carolina? I am currently teaching in Florida but am seriously thinking about moving my family to South Carolina. I am interested in finding out if there are teaching positions available and the chances of being hired.

doh I doubt if you really did sit in a real union negotiation. Your short sightedness on union's is really evident in your post. Especially in teacher unions.

Will Rogers You may doubt whatever you wish.....I was there, and did so. It is because of what I saw and learned from both sides of the negotiation is why I feel the way I do about unions. "doh" why are you not brave enough to stand by your statements, but hide? That is a coward's way. A friend I worked with as a teacher now works for the AFL-CIO in union HQ. ...See More
