My heart is in traditional school. I have taught both Language Arts before, so it's not like I don't have ANY experience. I'm a good teacher (of course, I know I would have to prove that) and do NOT contribute to the shameful educational ranking our state has (and I say that with humility :)).
My question is, I'm thinking of the Columbia area, and would like to know the job outlook for someone in my position. Also, is it hard to switch over certificates? Is there a separate state test I would have to take in ORDER to get my SC certificate?
First of all, no, not all unions are bad. The bad thing is that ost of them have become corrupted by people who are in it for the money. We end teacher abuses by ALL teachers becoming intelligent and knowledgeable abouot the political process and become political leaders where we live.
We CAN work together in groups, but remember, managers/professional in the traditional workforce are not permitted unions per se, they negotiate their contracts individually.
Once we form a group with intelligent cooperation, we design a standard set of contracts. We get those contracts as standardized forms across the entire state, and FORCE the boards and administrators to follow the law....by taking them to court over each and every infraction, and I mean every infraction in relation to teacher evaluation, classroom monitoring, teacher salaries, etc.
Once we have a set or team of individuals that will fight, change SHALL happen....but you have to remember this - education in America is POLITICALLY DRIVEN!

Are you daft? Most South Carolinians, especially teachers, have a great deal of difficulty with English. However some SC school district might hire a Russian language teacher as a political novelty
What are the qualifications to become an assistant principal in SC? Another teacher and I were talking and she said that an administrative degree wasn't necessary, only 18 hours of credit. I find that hard to believe. We looked on the SCDE site but didn't see anything. Does anyone know?

For teachers are the only class of employees that I am aware of that the SC legislature has by law intentionally removed the right of due process. When you sign a contract to teach in any public SC school you also sign away your right to due process. Contacting your SC representatives with a complaint would be a good thing to do for yourselves. I would also suggest that you contact the US Dept. of Justice since the state of SC remains under a civil rights watch. Another thing the SC teacher needs is a contract that clearly defines your employment responsibilities by a job description that is a SC standard relative to the subjects you teach and the ADEPT system. This would do away with the induction, annual and continuing contracts and will result in only a multi year teaching contract that is unilateral in SC. The ADEPT system needs to be modified so that the building principal is not a participant in any area of the ADEPT evaluation process. To be fair to the teacher all evaluators need to be independent of each other and must not be employees of the district employing the teacher being evaluated. These are some of the protections a SC teacher needs or most of you will continue to play against a stacked deck.

My district has about 10,000 students. We have twelve new NCBTs this year. Just curiou if this is in line with other districts. How many new NBCTs were named in your district this year?

Does your school use NWEA MAP test? Many, including myself would like to see this test replace the PASS test. So, I am curious as to how many schools are already using MAP in addition to PASS. Thanks.
I am actually a Sp. Ed. teacher and trying to find info. for personal reasons. My son just took the MAP and is in K-5. Are there other districts in SC that are doing this and if so what kind of scores have been accumulated for this age, reported, and interpreted? Thanks!

Hi. We had a pay freeze this year in North Carolina, and, of course, we all hate it. Did you get a pay freeze this year? Or were you lucky to get a raise?

When one types fast...mistakes happen. :-) But I disagree, I believe the SOuth to be more progressive in some things, better at others, and right along with the rest of the nation in the rest. And if you actually look at all the states, not just what others tell you, you will see you are wrong my dear one. I had the honor of doing a paper (140 pages worth....what a nightmare at grad school!) Here were some of the findings:
--Republicans in state and federal government personal wealth was uniformly BELOW those of democrat's personal wealth. --States with the highest welfare rates were northern states, with mostly white women not working as highest percentage of people on the dole. --The so called "progressive" states had massively higher property rates and millage rates. --In EVERY state, the money for schools is directed to the politically active suburbs, not cities or rural areas....the school money follows the political donations!
Those were just a few. Check the facts yourself, don't just take someone's word on it please.
You know why teachers get dumped on? Tor 3 reasons:
1. Not politically knowledgeable 2. Do not act or puroprt themselves as educated managers -which we are. 3. Do not get active in local politics.

I know that things got tough last year in Florida for new teachers trying to get a job. I was just wondering if there was a similar problem in South Carolina.

You have never done research, I can tell...and you represent EXACTLY the problem today in the USA...you don't do research...just go with the crowd.....sheep and cows do that to, al the way to the slaughter house.
